Japan Looks Towards Oceans as Sources of Renewables

WN Photo

The energy shortages has forced Japan to look towards alternative sources of energy. The Japanese government is now looking towards ocean-based sources of renewable energy. It will also take offshore wind power into consideration. The shut down of all nuclear power plants has resulted in severe shortage of electricity.

Proposed sites in marine areas will be sought from local governments to demonstrate experiments. These sites will be finalised by the March 2014.

The public sentiment is strongly negative towards nuclear power in the wake of the Fukishima nuclear crisis. The government taking this into account plans to invest in the oceans massive potential for renewable energy.

Japan is a maritime nation surrounded by seas on all four sides. Japan has control over 4.47 million sq. km of territorial water and exclusive economic zones. This is a huge potential that lies untapped. Promoting maritime energy could very well prove an important milestone for Japan?s search for renewable energy.

Energy analysts state that tides, winds and temperature differences could be harnessed to produce renewable energy.
