IRL: Wacom Bamboo Splash, Triggertrap Mobile and the iPad 3

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we're using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

We've got a mixed bag this week. Billy, who's reviewed a bunch of Wacom products on this site, talks about what it's like to live with the Bamboo Splash pen tablet. James, meanwhile, uses a mobile photography tool to ensure his reflection doesn't show up when he's shooting tablets and such. Rounding out the list, Darren takes a closer look at the iPad's display. He thinks it's alright.

India gang rape victim dies in Singapore hospital
US-INDIA-RAPE:India gang rape victim dies in Singapore hospital

By Kevin Lim

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - The Indian gang rape victim whose assault in New Delhi triggered nationwide protests died in hospital on Saturday of injuries suffered in the attack, a Singapore hospital treating her said.

The death of the 23-year-old medical student could spawn new protests and possibly fresh confrontations with the police, especially in the Indian capital, which has been the focus of the demonstrations.

"We are very sad to report that the patient passed away peacefully at 4:45 a.m. on Dec 29, 2012 (15:45 a.m. ET Friday). Her family and officials from the High Commission of India were by her side," Mount Elizabeth Hospital Chief Executive Officer Kelvin Loh said in a statement.

The woman, who was severely beaten, raped and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi, was flown to Singapore by the Indian government on Wednesday for specialist treatment.

Most rapes and other sex crimes in India go unreported and offenders are rarely punished, women's rights activists say. But the brutality of the assault on December 16 triggered public outrage and demands for better policing and harsher punishment for rapists.

The case has received blanket coverage on cable television news channels. The woman has not been identified but some Indian media have called her "Amanat", an Urdu word meaning "treasure".

Earlier on Friday, the hospital had reported that the young woman's condition had taken a turn for the worse. It said that her family had been informed and were by her side.

T.C.A. Raghavan, the Indian High Commissioner to Singapore, said after her death that the family has expressed a desire for her body to be flown back to India.

At a briefing earlier on Saturday, Raghavan declined to comment on reports in India accusing the government of sending her to Singapore to minimize the possible backlash in the event of her death.

Some Indian medical experts had questioned the decision to airlift the woman to Singapore, calling it a risky maneuver given the seriousness of her injuries. They had said she was already receiving the best possible care in India.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government has been battling criticism that it was tone-deaf to the outcry and heavy-handed in its response to the protests in the Indian capital.

"It is deeply saddening and just beyond words. The police and government definitely have to do something more," said Sharanya Ramachandran, an Indian national who is working as an engineer in Singapore.

"They should bring in very severe punishment for such cases. They should start recognizing that it is a big crime."

"SIGNIFICANT BRAIN INJURY"

The Singapore hospital said earlier that the woman had suffered "significant brain injury" and was surviving against the odds. She had already undergone three abdominal operations before being flown to Singapore.

Demonstrations over the lack of safety for women erupted across India after the attack, culminating last weekend in pitched battles between police and protesters in the heart of New Delhi.

New Delhi has been on edge since the weekend clashes. Hundreds of policemen have been deployed on the streets of the capital and streets leading to the main protest site, the India Gate war memorial, have been shut for long periods, causing commuter chaos in the city of 16 million.

Political commentators and sociologists say the rape has tapped into a deep well of frustration that many Indians feel over what they see as weak governance and poor leadership on social and economic issues.

Many protesters have complained that Singh's government has done little to curb the abuse of women in the country of 1.2 billion. A global poll by the Thomson Reuters Foundation in June found that India was the worst place to be a woman because of high rates of infanticide, child marriage and slavery.

New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures. Government data show the number of reported rape cases in the country rose by nearly 17 percent between 2007 and 2011.

Japan's Independent Film Theaters are Disappearing

One after the other, independent movie theaters are going out of business in Japan. In this post we will look at the situation in Tokyo,?which has the?largest number of theaters?in Japan?[ja].

In 2011, two theaters were closed in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward. This year, on January 29,?Ebisu Garden Cinema?[ja] and on February?27,?Cinesaison Shibuya?[ja] were shut.?Ginza Theatres Cinema?[ja] will follow suit in May 2013.

In the Asakusa area, which is home to?Denkikan,?Japan's first dedicated movie theater, built in the early 1900s and a symbolic place for Japan's motion picture, the last three traditional cinema houses?Asakusa-Meigaza?[ja], Asakusa-Chuei Gekijo?[ja] and Asakusa-Shin Gekijo?[ja] were forced to shut down on October 21, 2012.

The?Chuei Corporation?[ja] which ran the three theaters?explained ?the deterioration of the buildings? had forced them to close.

Quite a few people were shocked by the news:

The building, built in 1927, is older than Nihonbashi-Takashimaya which is designated as one of the important cultural properties. It?s regretable in that sense as well.

Proposal by Director Wakamatsu :?The Agency for Cultural Affairs need not to provide grants for film making, which will only result in poor production. Instead they should support the suffering small theaters. It is meaningless to make films if there?s no theater to show them! Please amplify my message.

Meanwhile, @Dol_Paula tweeted in reply to this question on 2channel, a Japanese textboard, ?What makes you avoid going to theaters??

@Dol_Paula
Because the ticket is valid for only one show. It used to be okay to stay and watch the same show again with the same fee. Also, now DVDs are available in three months after the film comes off the theater, far shorter than six months. I was surprised to see a TV commercial announcing the release of the DVD version of Cars 2

@guitarkids2010 thinks that it is because films themselves have lost their appeal:

Israel indicts former foreign minister Lieberman

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli far-right leader Avigdor Lieberman was charged on Sunday with fraud and breach of trust, allegations that prompted his resignation as foreign minister two weeks ago, justice officials said.

Lieberman, who has denied the accusations, remains head of the Yisrael Beitenu party that has formed a coalition with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party ahead of a January 22 parliamentary election.

Israeli justice officials said Lieberman was indicted on charges relating to the promotion of an Israeli diplomat who had illegally given him information about a police investigation against him.

Under Israeli law, conviction on the fraud and breach of trust charges could disqualify Lieberman from holding a cabinet post in the next government.

Lieberman, who lives in a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank, has stoked controversy by questioning the loyalties of Israel's 1.5 million Arab citizens.

His comments have drawn accusations of racism but have also given him a large electoral following beyond his Russian-speaking base.

Earlier this month, he angered the European Union by saying it had not sufficiently condemned calls by Hamas Islamists for Israel's destruction, likening this to Europe's failure to stop Nazi genocide against Jews during World War Two.

The European Union foreign policy chief called the comments offensive and reiterated the bloc's commitment to Israel's security.

Born in Moldova, Lieberman emigrated to Israel in 1978. He became administrative head of the Likud party in 1993 and ran the prime minister's office from 1996 to 1997 during Netanyahu's first term. He left and formed Yisrael Beitenu in 1999.

Lieberman is the latest in a string of Israeli politicians to face corruption charges in recent years. Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert resigned in 2008 after being indicted, though he has since been acquitted of most of the charges against him.

Measuring Guide

The below is just a guide. We recommend that whenever possible you get a qualified seamstress to measure your wedding dresses size. Always get someone else to make the measurements for you.Measuring yourself will give inaccurate numbers and could lead to disappointment.

Bust

Bust - Not your bra size! Take the tape around your back and bring it across the fullest part of your bust. Your arms should be relaxed, down at your sides. You must wear a unpadded bra when taking this measurement.

Waist
Waist- This is the smallest part of your waist. Typically it`s an inch or so above your belly button. Also known as the natural waistline.Keep tape slightly loose to allow for breathing room
Hips
Hips- This is the widest part of your hips, across the hipbone. Measurement is taken approximately 7 inches below the natural waistline. This measurement is not needed for full gowns.
Hollow to Floor
Hollow to Floor- This is the length from your hollow ( the hollow just under your neck ) to your bare feet. (Take the tape from your front, straight down to the floor). You should stand upright and your feet should keep together.

Height

Height- Stand straight with feet together.Measure in bare feet.Begin at the top of the head and pull tape straight down to the floor. We'll Add more 5cm to suit high heels.

8. Will I be able to alter my dress if I receive it and it doesn?t fit exactly right?

Yes. If your size fluctuates or you want to modify the dress slightly, we always leave a few inches in the seams so that your local tailor can easily make alterations as needed. Dresses generally have a margin of 1 inches on either side of a seam. Flower detailing, beading or belts/ribbons may limit ability to let a dress out.

9. Will my dress exactly match the color I see on your website?

There might be a slight difference between the actual dress?s color and what you see in the photo depending on your computer monitor?s display settings.

Auto sales look good for '13, but for the 'cliff'

14 hrs.

It?s been a disappointing holiday season for many?retailers, but U.S. car dealers have been busily ringing up sales?as the year wraps up.

If preliminary numbers for December hold up, 2012 could prove to be the industry?s best year since the long recession and painfully weak recovery began. And 2013 is?shaping up to be even better ? unless auto sales fall off the fiscal cliff. ?

?I clearly hope we get some bipartisan effort to avoid the fiscal cliff,? said Ford Motor Co. Chairman Bill Ford Jr. ?It?s vitally important for the economy that we work this out.?

That's true for the auto industry, in particular. After nearly half a decade of struggles, carmakers are ending 2012 on a positive note. November saw demand for new cars, trucks and crossovers surge at a double-digit pace. In fact, a number of makers including Audi, BMW, Honda, Nissan and Porsche are setting all-time sales records for the month. By the end of November, Hyundai had already beaten its previous full-year record set in 2011.

December, meanwhile, is expected to see another gain of around 15 percent, year-over-year, according to a forecast by LMC Automotive. The consulting firm has now upped its final forecast for all of 2012 to 14.5 million and conservatively anticipates another comfortable jump next year.

?The U.S. light-vehicle sales market continues to be a bright spot in the tremulous global environment,? said Jeff Schuster, LMC?s senior vice president of forecasting.? ?The only major roadblock ahead for the U.S. market is the fiscal cliff. Assuming that hurdle is cleared, 2013 is one step closer to a stable and sustainable growth rate for autos, with volume above the 15 million unit mark.?

Barring that setback, analysts anticipate a steady shift in the sort of vehicles Americans have been buying.?

The upcoming North American International Auto Show will feature an assortment of new products, and the debut of the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette and Chevy?s next-generation Silverado pickup are likely to be two of the star attractions. But the floor of Detroit?s Cobo Center will be covered with a variety of downsized models, including Honda?s pint-sized Urban SUV Concept and the new Lincoln MKC compact luxury crossover.

Ford's?B- and C-segment models ? subcompacts like the updated 2013 Fiesta and compacts???have jumped from 13 percent?of the overall U.S. market to 24 percent since 2004, according to Mark Fields,?Ford?s chief operating officer.?And the trend is expected to continue at an even faster pace going forward.

If anything, Americans are downsizing powertrains at an even more rapid rate, trading in V-6s for inline-fours and even abandoning traditional V-8s for high-tech turbo V-6s. Six-cylinder engines now account for more than half of the demand in Ford?s big F-Series pickups, Fields said.

While demand for smaller models is soaring, sales of some traditional American vehicles have remained strong ? pickups in particular. Credit the strong upturn in the housing market in recent months, said Mark Reuss, president of North American operations at General Motors.?

While the so-called ?personal use? segment has largely dried up, there?s significant pent-up demand among contractors and other professional for pickups and other full-size trucks, something Detroit?s Big Three hope to use to their advantage as they continue to hold off import competitors like Nissan and Toyota.

Pent-up demand is likely to float all boats, says analyst Joe Phillippi, from the largest to the smallest market segments. It helps, he adds, that automotive interest rates are at or near historic lows.

On the downside, makers have been cutting back incentives as demand outstrips supply, especially of more popular models like the Hyundai Elantra and the new Honda Accord. There are still bargains to be had on slower-selling models, but research by TrueCar.com reveals that incentives have slipped to their lowest levels in several years even as transaction prices ? the price customers actually pay ? have risen to near-record levels.

And that is likely to translate into record industry earnings, at least in North America. Ironically, the market is running counter to trends in much of the rest of the world. European car sales have been in freefall all year, and without a clear resolution of the Continent?s economic crisis, few see any short-term solution.? Even China, which has seen annual growth rates approaching 100 percent over the past decade, has started to stumble.

So, makers from around the world are once again looking to the U.S. to carry the load. The good news is that ?the forecast ahead looks even better,? Toyota?s top U.S. executive, Jim Lentz, recently said, adding that ?analysts expect we will reach 16 million in just a few short years.?

That?s still well short of the U.S. all-time record of 17.5 million vehicles sold in 2005, but it?s still a welcome turnaround from the disastrous slump the industry has only just left behind.

Children with medical complexity: Caught in a political and ... - Vector

What will happen to medically complex children if insurance coverage is reduced and fewer pediatricians are trained to care for them? (Image: Wikimedia Commons)

Jay Berry, MD, MPH, is a pediatrician and hospitalist in the Complex Care Service at Boston Children?s Hospital. His most recent research appears in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, accompanied by editorials on the findings? implications for health care and residency training. Berry further discusses its implications in this podcast.

My first encounter with a children?s hospital was as a first grader in 1980, when my 5-year-old cousin was diagnosed with cancer. Although her family was challenged to afford her cancer treatments, St. Jude Children?s Hospital in Memphis welcomed her and treated her cancer into remission. I remember my parents saying, ?Everybody in that hospital loves children. No child is turned away.?

In 1997, walking into the Children?s Hospital of Alabama as a medical student, I felt the same sense of hope and courage. Everyone on the staff believed that they could make a difference in the lives of the children and families, despite the horrific illnesses that many of the children endured. I knew, immediately, that I wanted to become a pediatrician and to learn how to care for sick children.

Nearly 15 years have passed, and I?m still learning. As a general pediatrician with the Complex Care Service (CCS) at Boston Children?s Hospital, I care for ?medically complex? children. These children have complex chronic health problems like severe cerebral palsy and Pompe?s disease. Many of them rely on medical technology, like feeding and breathing tubes, to help maintain their health. They routinely see a myriad of different providers to manage their health problems. In CCS, we try to optimize the health and well-being of these children by meeting their health needs, coordinating their care and creating proactive care plans for them.

Many of our patients travel long distances, across state lines, to get care at Boston Children?s Hospital because their local providers and hospitals are not set up to care for them. In a recent study of 28 children?s hospitals across the United States and Canada, we found that children with medical complexity are the most rapidly growing population of patients receiving hospital care. They are utilizing children?s hospitals more frequently over time than are healthier children, and they are becoming the predominant population that children?s hospitals serve in the inpatient setting.

In a study of 28 freestanding children?s hospitals from 2004 to 2009, hospitalizations of children with lifelong, complex conditions increased by 36%.

Children with medical complexity tend to arrive at the hospital with acute illnesses that are difficult to treat. They require more resources (medications, equipment, hospital staff) than healthier children. They stay in the hospital for a longer time, and they have a higher risk of returning back to the hospital after they are discharged home. If they do transition successfully to home, their parents and providers are faced with a heavy caregiving burden to keep them safe and healthy over time.

In the current political and economic climate, state and federal funds for children?s health are at risk for being cut, including Medicaid coverage for hospital care and coverage for community health services like home nursing and durable medical equipment. Most children with medical complexity rely on these funds to maintain their health, and children?s hospitals rely on these funds to treat these children.

Making matters worse, federal funding to train America?s next generation of pediatricians might be reduced. In the last few decades, most pediatricians have graduated from residency and fellowship programs in children?s hospitals, where, like me, they were taught how to properly care for children with medical complexity.

What will happen to these children if fewer pediatricians are trained to care for them? If limitations in their insurance plans preclude their healthcare needs from being met? Where would these children go for their care? What would their families do? Could existing community pediatricians pick up the slack? I?m bothered by the potential answers to these questions.

I?ve been privileged to train and work with clinicians and researchers from America?s best children?s hospitals. I?ve seen, first hand, how important these hospitals are for children, especially those with medical complexity. No matter how threatening the political and economic climate may be, children?s hospitals must keep their doors open to all types of sick children.

AUTOS: Top 10 Stories Of 2012 - Cars On SPEED

Here are the top 10 automotive stories that spun our wheels during 2012, the year that the ancient Mayans said would be the last. They were wrong.

Carroll Shelby Dies ? Certainly not unexpected since the performance-car icon was 89 and a long-time heart-transplant recipient, yet the death of the little ole Texas chicken farmer ? who drove to victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, led Ford?s defeat of Ferrari in Europe and, oh yeah, created one of the greatest sports cars of all time, the Shelby Cobra ? was still a shock to the automotive firmament. And in typical showman style, Shelby manages to die in the same year that the 50th anniversary of the Cobra was being celebrated worldwide. Shelby?s driving partner for the victory at Le Mans in 1959, Roy Salvadori, also died this year.

Auto Sales Boom ? Despite continuing stress in the economy, the U.S. auto market comes back strong with nationwide sales that by the end of the year start to rival the best annual results before the financial crash in 2008. The domestic brands are big winners, Toyota and Honda return to their high levels after losses resulting from the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and BMW retains its crown as top-selling luxury brand, ahead of Lexus and Mercedes-Benz.

One of the top sales for Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale auction in January was the $2.915 million result for a 1948 Tucker Torpedo. (Photo: Bob Golfen) Collector Cars Rule ? From Monterey, Calif., to Amelia Island, Fla., the unbridled passion for old cars of every ilk hit new heights, starting off with a roaring Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale sale in January totaling $92 million and running through a record-high $260 million sold at Monterey?s six collector car and motorcycle auctions. Values of top-drawer collector cars were through the roof, especially vintage sports and race cars from Ferrari and other great marques, and classic cars from such notables as Mercedes-Benz and Duesenberg, which routinely sailed into seven figures. The market for more-affordable collector cars was also booming, as interest in and prices for Mustangs, Camaros, custom hot rods, sports cars and muscle cars continue to surge.

Suzuki Packs It In ? Always a bit player on the U.S. automotive stage, Suzuki shuts down its entire car-selling operation in the United States in the face of perennially lagging sales, spotty dealership count and nothing in the pipeline. The Japanese company?s auto failure contrasts with its booming success as a builder of performance motorcycles, which will still be sold here along with watercraft products.

Performance Is Back ? Supercars and muscle cars stormed through another great year, many of them racing past the 500- and 600-horsepower marks, zero-60 times under 3 seconds and top speeds exceeding 200 mph.

Getting Clean ? Hybrids and electric cars took center stage in both the environmental and performance arenas. On the clean, consumer side, we had a bevy of unveilings of hybrids, plug-in hybrids and pure electrics ? highlighted by the all-electric Tesla S sedan and production concepts from BMW?s i division ? while such top automakers as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Jaguar (briefly) and Ferrari revealed plans for supercars powered by hybrid drivetrains. Meanwhile, Mazda shook up the clean-diesel proponents ? essentially German ? by unveiling its Mazda6 diesel. Turbocharging has also come increasingly into play for reducing engine sizes, gaining mileage and lowering emissions. The Toyota Prius lineup became a top seller worldwide, although the Nissan Leaf electric car and the Chevy Volt extended-range electric car have failed to meet sales targets.

Toyota Ponies Up ? Massive fines and settlements are being paid by the Japanese giant as a result of its 2009-2010 pedal-entrapment and unintended-acceleration woes. Just this month came the biggest fine ever levied against an automaker by the feds, $17.4 million, which adds up to total fines of about $60 million for failing to address the complaints in a timely manner. And this week came the announcement that Toyota would be paying out $1.1 billion to settle scores of lawsuits and claims, including the installation of brake-override systems in about 3.25 million of its vehicles. The amount could grow to $1.4 billion once it?s all tallied up.

Overblown Mileage Claims ? First it was the South Korean siblings, Hyundai and Kia, which performed numerous mea culpas and paid heavy cash penalties after it was revealed that the fuel-mileage figures for their cars were just a bit, well, optimistic. Now, Ford faces a federal review after complaints that the C-Max and Fusion hybrids fail to register the lofty mileage numbers that the automaker claims.

Connectivity Advances ? Automakers are devising all kinds of ways to connect your smart phone to your automobile, from providing owners? manuals and tutorials to integrating with the vehicles? entertainment, navigation and computer functions. They are also experimenting with replacing car keys with phones.

SRT Viper Reborn ? The first product from Chrysler?s new SRT division, the V10-powered supercar is thoroughly updated with greater performance and refinement, though it?s still the rawest muscle car out there. The Viper is the broadest statement of a resurgent Chrysler, which has had a very good sales year that included the first road-going manifestation of the Fiat/Chrysler union: the compact Dodge Dart.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, who topped an illustrious military career by commanding the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's forces out of Kuwait in 1991 but kept a low public profile in controversies over the second Gulf War against Iraq, died Thursday. He was 78.

Schwarzkopf died in Tampa, Fla., where he had lived in retirement, according to a U.S. official, who was not authorized to release the information publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

A much-decorated combat soldier in Vietnam, Schwarzkopf was known popularly as "Stormin' Norman" for a notoriously explosive temper.

He served in his last military assignment in Tampa as commander-in-chief of U.S. Central Command, the headquarters responsible for U.S. military and security concerns in nearly 20 countries from the eastern Mediterranean and Africa to Pakistan.

Schwarzkopf became "CINC-Centcom" in 1988 and when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait three years later to punish it for allegedly stealing Iraqi oil reserves, he commanded Operation Desert Storm, the coalition of some 30 countries organized by President George H.W. Bush that succeeded in driving the Iraqis out.

"Gen. Norm Schwarzkopf, to me, epitomized the 'duty, service, country' creed that has defended our freedom and seen this great nation through our most trying international crises," Bush said in a statement. "More than that, he was a good and decent man ? and a dear friend."

At the peak of his postwar national celebrity, Schwarzkopf ? a self-proclaimed political independent ? rejected suggestions that he run for office, and remained far more private than other generals, although he did serve briefly as a military commentator for NBC.

While focused primarily in his later years on charitable enterprises, he campaigned for President George W. Bush in 2000 but was ambivalent about the 2003 invasion of Iraq, saying he doubted victory would be as easy as the White House and Pentagon predicted. In early 2003 he told the Washington Post the outcome was an unknown:

"What is postwar Iraq going to look like, with the Kurds and the Sunnis and the Shiites? That's a huge question, to my mind. It really should be part of the overall campaign plan," he said.

Initially Schwarzkopf had endorsed the invasion, saying he was convinced that former Secretary of State Colin Powell had given the United Nations powerful evidence of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. After that proved false, he said decisions to go to war should depend on what U.N. weapons inspectors found.

He seldom spoke up during the conflict, but in late 2004, he sharply criticized then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and the Pentagon for mistakes that included inadequate training for Army reservists sent to Iraq and for erroneous judgments about Iraq.

"In the final analysis I think we are behind schedule. ... I don't think we counted on it turning into jihad (holy war)," he said in an NBC interview.

Schwarzkopf was born Aug. 24, 1934, in Trenton, N.J., where his father, Col. H. Norman Schwarzkopf Jr., founder and commander of the New Jersey State Police, was then leading the investigation of the Lindbergh kidnap case, which ended with the arrest and 1936 execution of German-born carpenter Richard Hauptmann for stealing and murdering the famed aviator's infant son.

The elder Schwarzkopf was named Herbert, but when the son was asked what his "H'' stood for, he would reply, "H." Although reputed to be short-tempered with aides and subordinates, he was a friendly, talkative and even jovial figure who didn't like "Stormin' Norman" and preferred to be known as "the Bear," a sobriquet given him by troops.

He also was outspoken at times, including when he described Gen. William Westmoreland, the U.S. commander in Vietnam, as "a horse's ass" in an Associated Press interview.

As a teenager Norman accompanied his father to Iran, where the elder Schwarzkopf trained the country's national police force and was an adviser to Reza Pahlavi, the young Shah of Iran.

Young Norman studied there and in Switzerland, Germany and Italy, then followed in his father's footsteps to West Point, graduating in 1956 with an engineering degree. After stints in the U.S. and abroad, he earned a master's degree in engineering at the University of Southern California and later taught missile engineering at West Point.

In 1966 he volunteered for Vietnam and served two tours, first as a U.S. adviser to South Vietnamese paratroops and later as a battalion commander in the U.S. Army's Americal Division. He earned three Silver Stars for valor ? including one for saving troops from a minefield ? plus a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and three Distinguished Service Medals.

While many career officers left military service embittered by Vietnam, Schwarzkopf was among those who opted to stay and help rebuild the tattered Army into a potent, modernized all-volunteer force.

After Saddam invaded Kuwait in August 1990, Schwarzkopf played a key diplomatic role by helping to persuade Saudi Arabia's King Fahd to allow U.S. and other foreign troops to deploy on Saudi territory as a staging area for the war to come.

On Jan. 17, 1991, a five-month buildup called Desert Shield became Operation Desert Storm as allied aircraft attacked Iraqi bases and Baghdad government facilities. The six-week aerial campaign climaxed with a massive ground offensive on Feb. 24-28, routing the Iraqis from Kuwait in 100 hours before U.S. officials called a halt.

Schwarzkopf said afterward he agreed with Bush's decision to stop the war rather than drive to Baghdad to capture Saddam, as his mission had been only to oust the Iraqis from Kuwait.

But in a desert tent meeting with vanquished Iraqi generals, he allowed a key concession on Iraq's use of helicopters, which later backfired by enabling Saddam to crack down more easily on rebellious Shiites and Kurds.

While he later avoided the public second-guessing by academics and think tank experts over the ambiguous outcome of Gulf War I and its impact on Gulf War II, he told the Washington Post in 2003, "You can't help but... with 20/20 hindsight, go back and say, 'Look, had we done something different, we probably wouldn't be facing what we are facing today.'"

After retiring from the Army in 1992, Schwarzkopf wrote a best-selling autobiography, "It Doesn't Take A Hero." Of his Gulf war role, he said, "I like to say I'm not a hero. I was lucky enough to lead a very successful war." He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and honored with decorations from France, Britain, Belgium, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain.

Schwarzkopf was a national spokesman for prostate cancer awareness and for Recovery of the Grizzly Bear, served on the Nature Conservancy board of governors and was active in various charities for chronically ill children.

"I may have made my reputation as a general in the Army and I'm very proud of that," he once told the AP. "But I've always felt that I was more than one-dimensional. I'd like to think I'm a caring human being. ... It's nice to feel that you have a purpose."

Schwarzkopf and his wife, Brenda, had three children: Cynthia, Jessica and Christian.

3 Personal New Year's Resolutions to Stay Skin Cancer Free in 2013

When thinking about your 2013 New Year?s Resolutions, consider making a conscious effort to prevent skin cancer in 2013. Yes, skin cancer is preventable in many cases. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 3.5 million skin cancers in over two million people are diagnosed annually (Skin Cancer Foundation).

Prevention starts with education, and knowing exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVA ? aging, and UVB ? burning rays) from the sun and tanning beds contributes to your risk of developing skin cancer. The good news is an individual can take simple steps to ensure a lifetime of healthy skin and still enjoy everything the outdoors has to offer.

3 Simple New Years Resolutions for Healthy Skin in 2013:

1. Use Sun Protection (Photo: Raw Elements SPF 30 Sunscreen)

1. Incorporate sun protection into your daily routine.

Use sun protection every day of the year. Even if you are indoors, windows allow UVA rays to penetrate the glass (glass blocks UVB rays). Start by incorporating sunscreen into your daily routine. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on your face and all exposed skin. If you wear makeup, apply a face sunscreen underneath your foundation even if your foundation has SPF, as most people don?t use a thick enough application to provide adequate sun protection. (Click here for dermatologist recommended face sunscreens.) If you?ll be outdoors for an extended period of time, wear a wide brim hat, UV400 sunglasses and UPF 50+ sun protective clothing. If you cannot wear sun protective clothing, apply sunscreen underneath your T-shirt since most regular clothing offers less than SPF 30 protection. Not only will this keep your skin healthy, but as added incentive, you?ll look younger longer since UV rays significantly contribute to visible signs of aging.

2. Perform a self skin exam

2. Perform a self-skin exam every month and track your mole changes.

You know your body best, so you?ll likely be the first to notice changes in the skin. Also, when caught early, skin cancer is easily treatable in most cases. This is why performing a self-skin exam is important. Print this body map from the Skin Cancer Foundation and then look for the following:

1. A skin growth that increases in size and appears pearly, translucent, tan, brown, black, or multicolored.

2. A mole, birthmark, beauty mark, or any brown spot that: changes color, increases in size or thickness, changes in texture, is irregular in outline, is bigger than 6mm or 1/4?, the size of a pencil eraser, appears after age 21.

3. A spot or sore that continues to itch, hurt, crust, scab, erode, or bleed.

4. An open sore that does not heal within three weeks.

If you notice any change in an existing mole or discover a new one that looks suspicious, see a physician immediately.

If you?re more of an smart phone app aficionado, technology is making performing a self-skin exam an exceedingly simple task. Check out smart phone apps on the Coolibar Pinterest page.

3. Get a full-body skin cancer screening (Photo: Charles Crutchfield III, M.D., M.B.B., F.A.A.D.)

3. Make time for a full-body skin cancer screening with a board-certified dermatologist once per year.

While you should check your skin every month, a board-certified dermatologist that works with skin every day may notice changes that you didn?t. Schedule an annual skin cancer screening to ensure your skin is healthy as can be!

The American Academy of Dermatology designates the first Monday in May as Melanoma Monday (5/6/2013). Dermatology offices often provide free skin cancer screenings. Find a free skin cancer screening on the AAD website or by calling your local dermatology office. Mark your calendars now!

Have a great 2013 and keep your skin healthy!
