The top 8 parenting controversies of 2011 (The Week)

New York ? Crotchless thongs, ADHD medication, chicken-pox lollipops, tiger moms ? parents had plenty to argue about this year

Moms and dads can all agree that parenting is no easy job. But ask them what's the best way to raise a kid, and get ready for an argument. Here, a list of eight parenting controversies that heated up talk at the dinner table in 2011:

1. Crotchless thongs... for 7-year-olds
A Colorado mom alerted the media when she visited a clothing store called Kid N Teen and found leopard-print, crotchless thong panties sized to fit girls as young as 7. The store's owner defended herself by saying that particular garment was meant for teens. But her critics ? and there were many ? said nobody should be urging teenage girls to buy underwear designed to make it easier, and faster, to have sex. "Holy triple inappropriate, Batman," said Meredith Carroll at Babble.

2. ADHD: Are we over-drugging our kids?
The number of kids being treated for ADHD with prescription drugs, such as Adderall, rose from 1.8 million in 1996 to 2.3 million in 2008. The biggest jump was among teens. Some doctors chalked up the rise to greater recognition of ADHD, while others said we're in the middle of an over-prescription "epidemic." I've prescribed these drugs to kids for more than 30 years, said Dr. Lawrence Diller at?The Huffington Post. I believe in "the effectiveness and safety of these medicines." But we should all be worried about a medical system "that is so dependent on this treatment."

3. The "insane" mail-order "chicken pox lollipops" craze
One of the year's more bizarre twists in the vaccine wars came when authorities had to warn parents not to order lollipops licked by children infected with chicken pox, which are being sold online. The theory behind the candy is that you give it to your kids so the exposure will inoculate them. One doctor calls the trend a form of "Middle Ages vigilante vaccination," and health officials warn it's dangerous and illegal to send infected materials through the mail.

4. Live birth... as performance art?
A pregnant New York City artist, Marni Kotak, arranged to have her baby in an art gallery...?as an audience watched. Kotak should be ashamed of the way she put her artistic vision ahead of the health and safety of her baby, said L.S. Carbonell at Lez Get Real. Her baby deserved to be born in a warm, safe place, not a public environment full of germs. But the sharing of intimate body functions is central to the history of performance art, said Ceridwren Morris at Babble, and the visceral act of giving birth certainly surely qualifies.

5. The great apple juice debate: FDA vs. Dr. Oz
TV medical expert Dr. Mehmet Oz caused a nationwide food fight when he said apple juice, which parents frequently give to their children, can have dangerously high levels of arsenic. The FDA fired back, saying "there is no evidence of any public health risk from drinking these juices."? Dr. Oz's statements are "extremely irresponsible," said Dr. Richard Besser at ABC News. Maybe, said Danielle Sullivan at Babble. But remember, the FDA shrugs off plenty of things many of us "do not feel are good for our kids," like trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, and meat injected with hormones and antibiotics.

6. Is Chuck E. Cheese creating tiny gambling addicts?
California mom Debbie Keller?sued Chuck E. Cheese Pizza for $5 million, claiming the restaurant's arcade games transform kids into gamblers. "It's time to crown a new hero in the mom world," said Jeanne Sager at The Stir. Chuck E. Cheese's games of chance are nothing but a training ground for Vegas. Then Keller should have just stayed away, said?Perez Hilton. If anyone's a gambling addict, it's her ? she's "rolling her legal dice for a $5 million jackpot!"

7. Vegan breastfeeding: A deadly crime?
A French vegan couple was prosecuted for neglect in the 2008 death of their 11-month-old daughter. They fed her only breast milk, which doctors say left the baby with a vitamin A and B12 deficiency due to her mother's diet. They also ignored a doctor's advice to get the baby treated in a hospital for bronchitis, trying natural remedies instead. This should "communicate a clear message to other vegans," said Sarah Pope at The Healthy Home Economist. "Abstinence from all animal foods is a danger to one's health and most particularly, your baby!" Nonsense, said Mike Adams at Natural News. This is simply anti-vegan bias.

8. Do Chinese "tiger moms" raise the best kids?
Yale law professor Amy Chua ignited a national debate when she argued in The Wall Street Journal that strict Chinese mothers raise more successful children than coddling Western parents. "If the goal is efficiency, excellence, and success," says Henry Blodget at?Business Insider, it would appear that tiger moms do have "most American mothers beat." Sorry, but there are "downsides of telling children what they can and cannot do or be," says Mike Vilensky at New York. "It's hard to imagine a dictatorial mom like Chua raising a Bill Gates or a Mark Zuckerberg."

India extends ban on Chinese milk imports

DBR Staff Writer Published 28 December 2011

The Indian foreign trade office has extended ban on import of milk and products from China for another six months.

Milk and milk products from China have been prohibited since September 2008 and the ban was in effect till 24 December, reported The Economic Times.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification that prohibition on import of milk and milk products (including chocolates and chocolate products and candies/ confectionery/ food preparations with milk or milk solids as an ingredient) from China is further extended till 24 June.2012 or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Though the DGFT has not cited any reason for the ban, it is understood it was over fears of Chinese milk containing melamine, a deadly chemical, a source said. The DGFT has not revealed the details of the reason for the extended ban.

5 of the hottest new Chinese smartphone apps in 2011

    Dec 27, 2011

    5 hot Chinese-made apps in 2011

2011 has been a great year for apps--and that is true in China as well. Here, hundreds of new startups have blossomed, and a good number of them have made some fantastic and good-looking services that are a credit to the iOS and Android platforms. (Of course, some old names got in on the action as well).

And so I thought it'd be a good idea to think back to some of this year's new apps, and find which ones have been rocking the ?free? section of the Chinese version of the iTunes App Store. Then I picked out five striking new apps that I spotted within the top 200.

As a result, I have five Chinese-made apps--all of which I?ve tested out at some point this year; and a couple of which I use daily--complete with a round-up of why they?re so special?

    Weixin

Big daddy Tencent has done it again? Launched in January of this year, Tencent?s group-messaging app Weixin is a service like Kik or Talkbox, allowing users to send text, audio, or video clips to each other for free using GPRS or 3G data.

As we saw earlier this month, Weixin has quickly become China?s most popular group-messaging app with 50 million users, pushed forward by the social media giant?s insanely huge social user-base, far outpacing any of its earlier rivals.

Get the app for iOS, Android, WP7, or Symbian via the Weixin minisite.

    Youjia

Youjia is part of a newer trend for location-based (LBS) apps - especially from startups--that pinpoint where you are and let you meet fellow users nearby. It?s all very informal and funky, with just pictures, messaging, and approximate distances to help you decide with whom to talk or flirt. There are many similar apps to Youjia such as Mix, Mojing (both for iOS only so far), or Momo for iOS and Android which do the same thing, and 2012 will likely see more contenders.

But for now, Youjia seems to be winning the race, as it?s the highest up in the iTunes App Store chart of any such services--now in 30th place in the free apps list in China and therefore probably garnering the highest number of users.

It?s in the iTunes store or the Android version is available from the Youkia site.

    Vida

Vida is a photo-filter app and social network built on the Instagram model. Although it arrived late to the scene, launching this autumn at the TechCrunch Disrupt Beijing conference. It now seems to be the most popular indie photo-sharing app on the Chinese iTunes store, up in the 79th position.

Perhaps part of its success is in its funkiness--especially the minimal and unique UI--as well as how easy it is to browse through other people?s images in a timeline that scrolls along both axis.

Grab it from the iTunes store or the Android version is on the Vida site.

    Huofar

Huofar?s app us in 97th place in the store?s list of popular free apps and is something entirely different: It helps users live more healthily. It does this by asking questions about your lifestyle, and gives you practical means to improve your diet using more nutritious food or Chinese medicine. A user can even turn the tables by asking the app to suggest a way to cure an array of common ailments.

In addition to its usefulness, the app is gorgeous, with a suitably ecologically-minded colour scheme.

Get the app from the iTunes store.

    Weico

2011 has seen microblogging, known by the generic ?weibo? name in China, explode even further here with Tencent Weibo edging out Sina?s platform to still be the larger of the two with a reported 300 million users. But both Sina?s and Tencent?s own Weibo apps are bland, and just as this has happened with Twitter, some third-party apps have popped up that offer more style, customizations, and funky features.

Weico is the best of these. And although it only supports Sina?s Weibo service, that hasn?t stopped it becoming one of China?s most popular quirky and cute apps, now resting in 158th place in the Chinese version of the iTunes App Store.

Check out the app on the iTunes store or the Android Market.

Mexican election law leads to complaint of bias (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? The de facto presidential candidates for two of Mexico's three big political parties have been told they can give speeches, but can't ask people to vote for them or run campaign ads until March.

The third party hasn't yet chosen its candidate but election officials have said that its nominees can run campaign ads ? for its party primary.

This, one of the de facto candidates said, is unfair because campaigning in the primary won't just be seen by members of that party, but by the general public.

    He, meanwhile, must remain silent.

Mexico's odd and strict laws governing electoral campaigning were intended to create strict rules in the wake of hotly contested 2006 presidential voting, which was marred by accusations of illicit support for candidates and a wave of unapproved campaign ads.

But the new regulations are creating new charges of inequity.

Institutional Revolutionary nominee Enrique Pena Nieto and leftist Democratic Revolution Party nominee Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador are both running uncontested and their parties won't be holding primaries.

Mexican electoral law says that official election campaigning cannot begin until March.

This has put the virtual nominees in the strange position of having sewn up their nominations, but having to avoid anything that looks like campaigning.

The ruling conservative National Action Party, however, has not chosen its candidate and the national electoral institute has said its three contenders can campaign for the party nomination until primary season ends in mid-February.

Peno Nieto, who leads in most polls on the presidential race, protested on Tuesday that the ads run during the National Action primary could affect the presidential election.

Pena Nieto's party ruled Mexico without interruption from 1929 to 2000, when it lost the presidential elections.

Lopez Obrador said he would accept the rules.

Obama taps economist, banker as Fed governors (Reuters)

HONOLULU/WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama will nominate Harvard economist Jeremy Stein and Jerome Powell, an investment banker and former Treasury official, to the two empty seats on the Federal Reserve's policy-setting board of governors.

The White House's pick of candidates, who have Democratic and Republican credentials respectively, may help speed their nomination through Congress amid a sluggish economic recovery that has failed to put a major dent in the unemployment rate, now at 8.6 percent.

While neither has laid out detailed views on monetary policy, Stein wrote a paper earlier this year suggesting he would back the Fed's unconventional efforts to keep down long-term borrowing costs, which have been controversial in Washington. The Fed for over three years has adopted an array of radical measures to keep interest rates low and spur recovery.

Stein, who previously worked for the Obama administration as an adviser to the Treasury secretary and a National Economic Council staff member, specializes in stock price behavior, corporate investment and financing decisions, risk management and capital allocation inside firms. He declined to comment on his nomination.

The choice of Powell, who served at the Treasury during President George H. W. Bush's term in the late 1980s and early 1990s, could be aimed at mollifying Senate Republicans. They blocked Peter Diamond, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology economist, saying the Nobel prize winner was not qualified for the job and was too sympathetic to government intervention in the economy.

Powell is a lawyer by training and worked at Dillon, Read and Bankers Trust Co. after leaving the senior Bush administration and before joining Carlyle Group. His knowledge of financial markets could help him fill the gap left by Kevin Warsh, a former Morgan Stanley executive who acted as Chairman Ben Bernanke's point-man for crisis negotiations.

    FULL BOARD

However, Powell's financial industry background may also be a source of criticism from analysts who already see the U.S. central bank as being too cozy with Wall Street.

Powell is currently a visiting scholar at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, focused on federal and state fiscal issues. He was not immediately available to comment. Both Stein and Powell had already been flagged in various press reports as likely nominees.

In response to a deep recession and financial crisis, the Fed slashed interest rates to near zero and sharply expanded its balance sheet to $2.8 trillion to keep the economy afloat. Some analysts worry the Fed's asset purchases could make it harder for the central bank to tighten monetary policy when it decides the time is right.

If Powell and Stein are confirmed, it would be the first time since April 2006 that all seven seats on the Fed's board are filled. The term currently filled by Elizabeth Duke, the last remaining George W. Bush appointee on the board, is to expire at the end of January, though governors can choose to stay in office until a successor is confirmed.

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Johnson, a Democrat, welcomed the most recent nominations.

"With the fragile state of the U.S. economy and a looming European debt crisis, Chairman Johnson believes it is imperative that our financial regulators operate at full strength," his office said in a statement. "Chairman Johnson is committed to moving these nominations though the Banking Committee in a timely manner and is looking to schedule a hearing soon."

Responder Cancelar avatar_Ernesto Weber R. Ernesto Weber R. dijo hace 3 horas

@Fabian: tenis 3GS todav?a?

avatar_Fabian Fabian dijo hace 1 hora

Curis lands $6M pay for cancer drug review in Europe

    Thursday, December 22, 2011

    By Michelle Lang

Curis Inc. has $6 million more in its coffers from a milestone payment after its collaborator Roche submitted its small molecule cancer drug candidate, vismodegib, to the European Medicines Agency for approval in treating advanced basal cell carcinoma.

The milestone payment comes from Genentech Inc., a member of the Roche Group. Curis and Genentech formed a collaboration agreement in 2003, in which Genentech will develop vismodegib, based on small molecule and antibody inhibitors licensed out by Curis.

The oral drug candidate, vismodegib, is a Hedgehog pathway inhibitor. The EMA approval would grant its use in treating patients with advanced basal cell carcinoma where surgery is not an option. Curis noted in a press release that the drug candidate is in a Genentech-led Phase 2 trial, as well, for operable forms of basal cell carcinoma.

If vismodegib is approved by the EMA, Curis would receive additional milestone payments and royalties on sales of the drug. The LExington company has already taken in $8 million from Genentech in November, after vismodegib (GDC-0449) was submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for review in treating advanced basal cell carcinoma, where surgery is not appropriate.
    ?
Curis, which moved to Lexington from Cambridge in May, employs about 40 people.

As Obesity Rises, More Suffer From Acid Reflux (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 21 (HealthDay News) -- As the obesity epidemic spreads around the world more people are suffering from acid reflux, likely increasing the number of those who will develop esophageal cancer, a new study suggests.

In Norway, the prevalence of acid reflux, also called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), has risen almost 50 percent in the past 10 years, say researchers led by Dr. Eivind Ness-Jensen, from the HUNT Research Center's Department of Public Health and General Practice at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Levanger.

The increasing number of people who are obese is "the main attributable factor," he said.

Ness-Jensen said the same trend of rising GERD symptoms is happening in the United States and all Western countries.

"The problem is that these symptoms are associated with adenocarcinoma of the lower esophagus," Ness-Jensen said. "What we are afraid of is increasing incidence of this cancer, which is increasing already. It might get worse in the future."

There are few treatments for this cancer and the prognosis is "very poor," Ness-Jensen said. "Luckily, very few people get it, but it is increasing quite rapidly."

It is possible that losing weight could reduce the risk of developing GERD and esophageal cancer, Ness-Jensen added. "That's our next study," he said.

The study appears in the Dec. 21 online edition of the medical journal Gut.

The team collected data on almost 30,000 people who took part in the Norwegian Nord-Trondelag Health Study from 1995 to 2009.

Over that time, the prevalence of those with GERD symptoms increased 30 percent and the number of those with severe symptoms increased 24 percent, the researchers found.

Those who had GERD symptoms at least once a week went up 47 percent, they add.

Both men and women of all ages experienced an increase in GERD. However, the most severe symptoms were mostly among middle-aged people, Ness-Jensen's group found.

Among those with the most severe symptoms, 98 percent took medicine to suppress the symptoms, compared with 31 percent of those with mild symptoms, the researchers noted.

Those least likely to have GERD were women under 40, but women were more likely to develop the condition as they aged. Severe symptoms were seen mostly in those aged 60 to 69.

About 2 percent of those with GERD saw their symptoms spontaneously disappear. This occurred mostly among women younger than 40, the researchers noted.

Dr. Daniel Sussman, an assistant professor of gastroenterology at the University of Miami School of Medicine, commented that "symptoms of reflux are increasing in the United States, partly because patients notice it more and doctors are better at noticing it and treating it."

Most important, lifestyle, diet and obesity are causing the increase in reflux symptoms, he said. "My suspicion is that obesity is the biggest contributor to that," Sussman said.

The biggest side effect of GERD is its effect on the patient's quality of life, Sussman said. He said that of course, it's also a risk factor for esophageal cancer.

Sussman said that there is evidence that losing weight will help improve reflux symptoms and lower the risk for cancer.

Mission: Impossible 5 Rumor Mill Stars Spinning

paramount skydance moving ahead with mission impossible 5 with tom cruise

People might look back at the 2011 holiday movie season and claim that they knew?Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol?was going to be a big hit, but don?t be fooled by that 20/20 hindsight talk. With Tom Cruise finding it harder and harder to strike box office gold in recent years, a movie franchise that many claimed was past its prime, and a director (Brad Bird) whose previous achievements were in the realm of animation? needless to say, there were more than a few doubts hanging over the film.

As of writing this post,?Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol is an undeniable success, having scored well with critics (read our review) and over $100 million at the worldwide box office after an impressive 5-day IMAX debut and just one day in worldwide theatrical release. It?s little surprise, then, that Paramount (and its subsidiary, Skydance Productions) is already looking ahead to Mission: Impossible 5.

Moviehole has done some digging around at the studio and discovered that they are indeed pleased with how Ghost Protocol has performed so far, and are wholly enthused about the movie?s projected earnings over the entire holiday block. As one source connected to Paramount?s production branch claimed, ?Skydance definitely wants to get going quickly on [Mission] 5. And a Top Gun.?

[Sidenote: We've previously reported on the in-development sequel to Top Gun, which director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are onboard for - and would supposedly feature Tom Cruise in a supporting role as Maverick. If you want to know more, just check out our coverage of Top Gun 2.]

As we discussed on our own Mission: Impossible 4?episode of the Screen Rant Underground podcast, with Brad Bird and Tom Cruise having successfully given this franchise a new lease on life, seeing a fifth installment go into production is almost a no-brainer. The next chapter would need to come soon, though, because as was noted by our entire editorial stuff, certain scenes of a shirtless Cruise in M:I4 revealed that, while still buff, the action star is starting to show his age. If he is to remain the face of the franchise, best not to wait too long before sending him on his next Mission.

tom cruise shirtless in mission impossible 4 ghost protocol

One of the strengths of Ghost Protocol was its re-aligned?focus on an ensemble dynamic, rather than being the ?Tom Cruise vs. the world? showcase that previous installments were.?Paula Patton, Simon Pegg and Jeremy Renner helped shoulder a lot of the weight that would?ve otherwise been placed squarely on Cruise, and if Bird comes back to helm the next film (and he definitely should be given that option) it?s our hope that the team-centric focus continue.

Did you enjoy Mission: Impossible 4? Ready to see Mission: Impossible 5?sooner before later?

Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol is currently playing in regular and IMAX theaters. We?ll keep you posted on the status of Mission: Impossible 5.

Pakistan may tax ground shipments to NATO troops

Afghanistan-bound trucks stopped at Pakistani border

Afghanistan-bound trucks carrying supplies for NATO forces parked as authorities close the border at Torkham border post in Pakistan, Nov 27, 2011.

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan is considering plans to slap millions of dollars in new charges on future supplies taken through the country's land route for U.S.-backed Western troops in Afghanistan, senior Pakistani government officials and a minister have told CBS News.

The payments are being considered in the name of costs such as for "inspection of cargo" and "maintenance of infrastructure" worn down by trucks.

Though the exact scale of funds planned to be earned remains unclear, senior Western diplomats warned that the move could further strain Pakistan's already troubled ties with the U.S.-led international security assistance force or ISAF in Afghanistan.

On Thursday, findings of a U.S. military investigation in to a helicopter raid on two of Pakistan's army posts near the Afghan border on November 26th, found a lack of trust between the U.S. and Pakistan.

U.S.: Mistrust and mistakes led to Pakistani deaths

The killing of 24 Pakistani soldiers in that attack prompted an unprecedented wave of protests from the country's civil and military officials. A senior Pakistani government official who spoke on background and discussed the new charges under consideration, said "we want to have a productive relationship with the U.S. and other friends in the Western camp. But unlike the past, every service that we perform will have to be paid for at a realistic price."

Western diplomats warned that Pakistan's demand for charging large sums of money on cargo for Afghanistan will not help improve its trust with its partners, including the U.S.

"The issue is not just financial. The problem is, we don't know how this plan (for higher charges) will play itself out diplomatically," one senior Western diplomat in Islamabad told CBS News on condition of anonymity. "I fear this plan will keep Pakistan locked in its currently strained relationship (with the U.S.-led western alliance) because the message from Pakistan will be a negative one."

Though Pakistan hasn't specified a timeline for resumption of the truck facility, the Pakistani government officials and a minister who spoke to CBS News on condition of anonymity, said they expect it to be resumed within weeks.

"Nobody wants to keep the facility shut forever. The bigger question now is, what will be the conditions attached for the future," said a senior government official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Pakistani government minister who also spoke on condition that he will not be named said "a decision has been reached in principal that when the supply route is re-opened, the trucks will have to bear a realistic cost which will go to the Pakistani government. In the past, each supply truck contributed less than $10 for passage through Pakistan. This is not realistic any more."

Meanwhile, Pakistan's foreign ministry officials defended a parliamentary review of the truck facility for Afghanistan. "Obviously, one thing is very clear that this exercise is not to wreck our relations with any particular country. This exercise is to streamline our cooperation on such a sensitive issue," said Abdul Basit, the spokesman of the foreign ministry in Islamabad.

In recent days, Pakistani officials have complained privately that Islamabad's hardening attitude towards the terms for future relations with its Afghanistan-based Western allies is driven in part by what it sees as punitive steps taken by the U.S.

"You have the United States tying future assistance to conditions like the secretary of state certifying that Islamabad is cooperating fully on counter-terrorism measures," said the Pakistani minister who spoke to CBS News. "We have lost about 40,000 people in our decade-old war on terror which we began when the U.S. attacked Afghanistan. The Americans still want us to prove that we are genuine in our efforts. What could be bigger nonsense than this?" asked the Pakistani minister.

12 energy-related predictions for 2012 in Canada - Stephen Koch, Executive Director, NAIMA Canada

    Please Wait - Uploading....

    Dec 22nd, 2011 5:28 PM

Does Canada need more energy supply or more insulation?

Clearly, this is a gross simplification but it is estimated that almost a third of Canada's current energy consumption is used for heating and cooling buildings and homes. This number could be cut in half with proper conservation initiatives.??

This is the context for my 2012 Canadian energy conservation predictions - within an insulation context.

    1. Rising energy costs will make the payback period for installing insulation even quicker.?? Despite a slower new home construction market and a slowing of insulation for these applications - it will be a record year for insulation used for home and industrial retrofits to deal not only with new homes but to upgrade the vast amount of under insulated existing homes.

    2. More Canadian communities will adopt "solar ready" new home construction regulations like Campbell River B.C.??This will make the future installation of solar hot water appliances, for instance, easier and less expensive.??

    3. More real estate agents will increasingly educate themselves on energy efficiency.??Take the Calgary Real Estate Board who has an on-line directory on its Go Green website listing agents who have passed a series of courses to help inform consumers of choices and rebates offered by governments.

    4. A record year for homes to meet higher energy efficiency standards in Canada than ever before. This is in large part because the new Ontario Building Code, coming into effect January 1, 2012.??But we also see across Canada more and more home builders are adopting ever higher standards of green building.??One of the easiest ways to meet this standard is through the intelligent application of various cost effective insulation products.

    5. As companies faced with flat sales results will be forced to focus more on cost controls, reviews of energy efficiency practices will become more frequent. Expect more utilities and provincial governments to expand incentive programs for the commercial and industrial sectors especially where they can be demonstrated to reduce peak period electricity load.

    6. White or reflective roofs and green roofs (which have seen widespread use in warmer climates to reduce cooling costs) will be increasingly embraced across the country to combat summer cooling bills.

    7. Adoptions of technologies (the evolution of the programmable thermostat) used to remotely control energy consumption when demand is highest, while at the same time allowing customers to individually manage their electricity costs in real-time. The speed of adoption will be dependent on smart meter deployment and will be controlled by phone based applications.

    8. Banks and financial institutions will see the reduced operating costs for more energy efficient homes and buildings. These incentives will help offset the upfront costs of retrofits and help provide more disposable income for the building or home owner.??"Green" mortgages can be expected to proliferate.

    9. A rise in small businesses doing customized installations of weatherization, insulation and caulking.??An evolution of the local "handyman".

    10. Discussions about "energy independence" or "energy security" at the community, provincial and national level will become more prevalent.

    11. Building Codes - In 2012 for the first time, we expect the national building code to include energy efficiency measures for homes. This will make it much easier for provinces to adopt a building code that will help reduce operating costs for the home owner.

    12. An increased profile for energy conservation in the public policy debate. It will shift from thrift to how conservation can offset demand and reduce the need for investment in new generation and peak consumption.

Andy Rubin says there are now over 700,000 Android devices activated every day

    Andy Rubin

Andy Rubin just let loose a new number on Google+, stating "There are now over 700,000 Android devices activated every day".  That's a whole lot of Android phones and tablets.  In fact, that's 4,900,000 per week, 19,600,000 per month, and a whopping 235,200,000!  With Android currently having over 200 million active devices, that means we'll be close to 500 million Android phones and tablets having been sold and activated by next December if things don't slow down.

    And we'll love them all.
