Shell shuts major oil pipeline in Nigeria

ABUJA (Reuters) - Shell's Nigerian unit shut its Bonny oil pipeline and deferred 150,000 barrels per day of production on Sunday after oil thieves caused a fire, the company said.

"Shell ... has shut the 28-inch Bomu-Bonny Trunkline after discovering a fire on it early this morning," a statement from the company said.

"A burning vessel, thought to be involved in the theft of crude oil from the line, was sighted near the incident site. The line conveys crude oil to Bonny Terminal."

Shell said it was mobilizing to fight the fire and would investigate the cause and carry out repairs as soon as possible.

Bonny Light is Nigeria's benchmark crude, used to price other grades of oil, and makes up around 10 percent of the total oil exported out of Africa's biggest producer.

Nigeria was due to export around 205,000 bpd of Bonny Light in November and 229,000 bpd in October, according to provisional loading programs. The grade is gasoline-rich and is popular with U.S. refiners.

Oil theft is a major problem in the Niger Delta wetlands region in southern Nigeria, where the majority of its oil is produced. The thousands of kilometers of winding waterways and creeks are difficult to police, although there is also evidence that security officials have been complicit in theft.

Shell estimates more than 150,000 bpd of oil is being stolen by gangs who tap into pipelines and siphon off industrial quantities of oil. Some of it is refined locally, while the rest is ferried out to larger ships offshore. (Reporting by Joe Brock; Editing by Dale Hudson and Maureen Bavdek)

Last week it was the infamous Hail Mary in Seattle that wrongly gave the Seahawks a touchdown and likely led to the end of the NFL?s lockout of its referees. This week there are no replacements to blame, just longtime ref Jeff Triplette and his crew, who botched several calls, including a fumble by Saints kickoff returner Darren Sproles that they wrongly ruled down by contact, and a push-off in the end zone by Saints receiver Marques Colston on a touchdown catch that should have been called back for offensive pass interference.

But this time the bad officiating didn?t cost the Packers the game, and they improved to 2-2. The Saints fought hard, but in the end they lost once again, falling to 0-4.

Oman held the title, which put him in charge of the U.S. Copyright Office, from 1985 through 1993, and previously helped draft the 1976 Copyright Act while working for the Senate Subcommittee on Patents, Trademarks, and Copyrights.

He still works on copyright issues today, and has filed an amicus brief in a dispute over Aereo, a streaming TV service that lets people access over the air TV broadcasts via the Internet. Predictably, Oman sides against Aereo.

But Mike Masnick at TechDirt catches him going much, much further than that. At one point, Oman seems highly annoyed that Aereo designed its system to be technically legal, writing the system seems to have "been designed by a copyright lawyer peering over the shoulder of an engineer to exploit what appeared to Aereo to be a loophole in the law and shoehorn the Aereo business model into the Cablevision decision."?

Yes, as Masnick has explained, Aereo's system is a workaround ? a workaround built to stay with the legal boundaries established existing copyright laws. But Oman thinks inventors shouldn't be allowed to do that, at least not without permission. They ought to have to explicitly ask Congress for permission before taking a product to market.?

From Oman's brief:

Whenever possible, when the law is ambiguous or silent on the issue at bar, the courts should let those who want to market new technologies carry the burden of persuasion that a new exception to the broad rights enacted by Congress should be established. That is especially so if that technology poses grave dangers to the exclusive rights that Congress has given copyright owners.Commercial exploiters of new technologies should be required to convince Congress to sanction a new delivery system and/or exempt it from copyright liability. That is what Congress intended.

The idea, Oman argues, is that ?the courts should not saddle the copyright owner with having to convince Congress to act to prohibit unauthorized Internet retransmissions.? But the inevitable effect would almost certainly be to substantially slow the pace of innovation, and likely prohibit many potentially useful inventions that might also be used to infringe upon copyrights. And judging by Oman's irritation with the fact that Aereo was designed to be legal, he apparently thinks that this should apply even to systems and technologies built with the explicit purpose of staying on the right side of the law.?

Even if you favor broad copyright protections, this seems like a deeply problematic balance, and an awfully high price to pay just to protect copyright owners from any possible threat.?

Humanities with Ms. Lloyd ? Happy (almost) October Break

Hey all you grade 6 KIDDOS?

Our first break is already here! It seems almost impossible that in six and a half weeks we have come so far and know each other so well. I hope all of you take this time to relax with your families and enjoy the sights and sounds of this great city we call home. For those of you traveling to far off lands, please come back with many stories of your wild adventures!

Over the break we would like you to begin thinking about your family?s culture. And what better way to capture the culture of your family then by taking some snapshots and digging out old pictures. We would like to see pictures of?

• Traditional clothing (A picture of you, new or old, dressed in clothing that represents your culture)
• Family values (What is most important to your family)
• Food (Maybe a dish or style of cooking that is specific to your family)
• Family traditions (What do you always do together?)
• Fine arts (Dance, music, entertainment, artwork)

The pictures can be in electronic form, printed or scanned. Try to find anywhere from 1-5 pictures for each category.

When we return from break, you will be putting together a keynote using the pictures you found over the break. This will kick off our study of culture and provide the foundation as we extend our learning to other civilizations and cultures.

Making Family Game Night Fast, Delicious, & Fun! #DipDipHooray ...

My family loves board games.?? But because my children are still young (almost 3, 5, and 8), they have a limited attention span.? My husband, Father Geek, has a plethora of games waiting on the shelf of his office for when they have greater abilities.? But for now, we like to keep our game nights simple.? Fast and yummy food, with simple, easy to play games.?? The time we share together as a family creating memories is really what it is all about!

Most nights of the week, I make homemade meals for my family.? It is work, but I consider it my contribution.? But sometimes it just makes sense to make an easy meal.? Too much cooking time can take away from family time.? Obviously I wouldn?t recommend eating prepackaged food all the time, but a quick fix every now and again is a great thing indeed:)

This is supper.? Okay, okay we had a salad too.? But it just doesn?t get any easier than this.?? And of course, the kids loved it!!? Through out the meal each kid would periodically say, ?dip, dip, HOORAY!?.? Chicken nuggets, french fries, and ketchup for supper?? This rules!

After a quick trip to Walmart, I was easily able to pick up all the necessary supplies for our family game night- including the cute dipping bowls.? Interested in my shopping trip??? Check out my Google + story.

Picking up some ketchup, fries, and chicken nuggets is so easy!

In the twenty or so minutes while dinner was cooking, I set the table for our fun.? The kids were especially delighted by the fun dipping bowls!

In no time at all, we were ready to chow down!

My five year old loves ketchup so much even dips his spinach in it!

What a great meal!

The spark in his eyes, cues me in that he is up to something??

Oh know you don?t!!!

Don?t drink the ketchup!!!

After our ketchup feast, I mean supper, it?s time to bring out the games!

My boys first choice?? Star Wars Trouble!

With three little boys in the house, it?s just a given that anything Star War related is going to be a hit!

In this game R2D2 makes noises when you push down on the dice bubble!

And then inspired by the DipToPlay.com game of the week, we played a game of Pictureka!

I discovered Pictureka as the Game of the Week by visiting DiptoPlay.com.? By uploading the UPC codes from my Tyson chicken nuggets, Ore-Ida french fries, and Heinz ketchup I was able to unlock the Game of the Week and even play the online version.? As I write this, the Game of the Week has now changed to Jenga.? I love that game!? And the online version is completely addicting!

We took our chance with the card version of Pictureka.? We actually own quite a few Hasbro card games.? They are shorter than traditional board games, which is great with small children.

One of our new favorites is Clue Suspect.

This new version takes the traditional game of Clue and places it on fast forward without the game board.? My husband and I both thought it was brilliant!

By now my younger two boys were in bed and my oldest had a fun time handing out with the adults:)

And then of course I brought out dessert! Yum!

We had a fun time together with Nana playing games.

Hunters Active But Canada Geese Thrive in Minn.

State wildlife officials say the population of Canada geese appears to be increasing, even though Minnesota hunters killed more of the birds than any other waterfowl last year.

The state Department of Natural Resources estimates there were 434,000 Canada geese in the state this spring. A St. Paul Pioneer Press report says the DNR's goal is to have a population of 250,000 Canada geese.

Hunters have been out in force, but the Canada geese population continues to thrive. Federal figures say Minnesota hunters killed nearly 239,000 Canada geese last year. The DNR also issued a record 200 permits for farmers to kill geese out of season, up from 160 last year, resulting in as many as 1,500 geese being shot.

Wildlife managers are considering changes to hunting policies that might help bring the population down further.

Missouri Senate candidates Akin, McCaskill debate for first time

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) ? Republican Rep. Todd Akin's comments about rape are evidence of his extremism on several issues, Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill said Friday at the first debate between the Missouri Senate candidates. Akin painted his opponent as a big-spender who votes 90 percent of the time with President Barack Obama.

Republicans have long looked at Missouri as a winnable state in the effort to gain control of the Senate. Akin, 65, a six-term congressman from suburban St. Louis, won a hotly contested three-way race for the GOP Senate nomination on Aug. 6.

But just weeks later, Akin set off a furor in a televised interview by saying that women's bodies have a natural defense against pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape." He made the comments when asked whether he supported abortion in cases of rape, and the answer set off a firestorm that prompted key Republicans ? including Senate leaders, the party's chairman and GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney ? to drop their support.

McCaskill has said little about Akin's comments in the four weeks since he made them, only that Republican voters picked him and he should remain in the race.

Asked at Friday's debate before a gathering of Missouri newspaper editors about whether Akin's remarks had a place in the race, McCaskill, 59, an abortion rights supporter, said the comments "open the window to his views for Missourians." She called many of his views extreme, saying he wants to end federal funding for school lunch programs and privatize Medicare and Social Security.

"It's not what he said that is the problem," McCaskill said. "It's what he believes that is the problem."

Akin responded by saying the election was "not about words. It's about two different voting records that are the exact opposite."

Akin has repeatedly apologized in televised ads about the rape comment and insists he's not leaving the race, even though the gaffe has so far cost him millions of dollars in campaign money.

Despite everything, many still consider Missouri to be a toss-up given the state's increasingly conservative population.

The hour-long debate was largely cordial. Neither candidate interrupted the other. They greeted each other at the start and parted with smiles and brief handshakes.

Libertarian candidate Jonathan Dine said both parties share in blame for problems in Washington. He said he would oppose reckless spending and earmarks.

"The government should live within its means, just like the people of Missouri," Dine said.

The Philadelphia University community will have plenty of ways to participate in the National Women?s Health and Fitness Day on Wednesday, Sept. 26.

First established in 2002, National Women?s Health and Fitness Day seeks to raise awareness about healthy living practices for women. More than 100,000 women of all ages are expected to participate around the country.

Highlights of the day?s activities at PhilaU include:

• Human resources approved dress down day for faculty and staff with a ($1 minimum) donation to Northern Children Services; donations can be made throughout the day and items can be dropped off for Northern Children Services in The Gallagher Athletic, Recreation and Convocation Center lobby
• Raffle tickets distributed for each session participant?s attend; tickets can also be purchased
• Students can receive one PE signature for the completion of each session attended; movie sessions are worth two PE signatures
