Israel: Child abuse rates in Israel now higher than in US

Reports of child abuse in Israel have steadily grown over the past three years, as the number of reported cases in the US is decreasing, according to recent data the Jerusalem-based Haruv Institute collected and provided to The Jerusalem Post this week.

The data presented by the institute, which not only researches the phenomenon but also provides training to professionals working in the medical, educational and community fields, shows that in Israel in 2010 the number of reported child abuse cases was 18.9 for every 1,000 children, compared to 8.7 for every 1,000 children in 1995. The US figures for 2010 were 10 reports for every 1,000 children, compared to 14.7 reports for every 1,000 children in 1995.

While part of the rise in reporting of child abuse cases in Israel stems from greater awareness among professionals and society as to what constitutes abuse and how to report it, Haruv Institute director Prof. Asher Ben-Arieh said it has more to do with an alarming increase in violence throughout Israeli society in general.

?We are definitely a much more violent society than ever before,? said Ben-Arieh, who before being appointed director of Haruv late last year worked as associate director at the National Council for the Child.

The figures for Israel are based on data collected by the NCC and Haruv from child protection officers and social workers.

The US data comes from official sources, as well as professional surveys by researcher David Finkelhor.

Ben-Arieh, who has been researching and writing about cases of child abuse for many years, said that violence levels in society, especially those related to violence against children, are often connected to poverty and economic worries among other issues.

He said research shows that when parents are stressed about money issues, they typically have less patience and shorter fuses when dealing with their children. Israel?s poverty levels have steadily grown since the onset of the global economic crisis in 2008 and the most recent figures from the National Insurance Institute show that more than 433,000 families lived below the poverty line in 2010. Within that number, some 837,300 children were considered poor; additional data from the Ministry of Welfare and Social Services shows that an estimated 150,000 children are considered at-risk.

Asked whether the reported child abuse cases were mild or severe, Ben-Arieh said that based on the data alone it was extremely hard to determine whether cases being dealt with by social workers involved extreme violence, sexual abuse or negligence by parents.

Since taking over at the institute last last year, Ben-Arieh has focused on raising awareness from the ground up, including providing hands-on training for professionals such as teachers, doctors and educators on how to detect signs of child abuse and how to work with child victims of abuse. Among the programs recently initiated by the institute is a homogenous training program led by community social workers to counsel all members of a family in which abuse has occurred.

The Haruv Institute was founded five years ago by the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation with the goal of becoming a world center for advanced research in the field of child abuse within the family in Israel. The institute works very closely with the Ministries of Welfare and Social Services, Education and Health.

Canada: Kleenex hand sanitizer recalled over bacterial contamination

About 430 containers of Kleenex Luxury Foam Hand Sanitizer were pulled from shelves after the manufacturer detected bacteria that could cause serious health issues for people with weakened immune systems.

Hand sanitizer is meant to fight germs, but a bad batch distributed throughout Canada is being recalled for fear it will expose consumers to dangerous bacteria.

About 430 containers of Kleenex Luxury Foam Hand Sanitizer were pulled from shelves after product testing by manufacturer Kimberly Clark detected bacteria that could cause serious health problems for people with weakened immune systems, the CBC reported.

The bacteria pose little threat to healthy individuals whose immune systems are able to fight infections.

"For someone whose immune sytem has been weakened by other serious illnesses, especially cystic fibrosis, these bacteria can cause serious infections, including pneumonia and blood infection," Health Canada told UPI.

Political uncertainty abounds as ruling looms

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Supreme Court's imminent ruling on President Barack Obama's health care overhaul marks a key pivot point in the presidential race. But neither side knows which direction the high court's decision will turn the contest.

"My guess is they're not sleeping real well at the White House tonight," presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney told supporters Wednesday in northern Virginia.

Anticipation of Thursday's decision could be equally unnerving for Romney, whose opposition to the law has become a central pillar of his campaign.

Neither candidate has any direct influence over the ruling. The court could uphold the health care law, strike it down or deem the requirement that most Americans carry health insurance unconstitutional while retaining other aspects of the law.

The announcement is expected to be followed almost immediately by a barrage of advertisements and fundraising appeals from Democrats and Republicans, all trying to cast the decision in the most advantageous light for their candidates.

The Obama campaign began trying to raise money off the ruling even before it was announced. In a Thursday morning fundraising email with the subject line "Today's Decision," Obama campaign manager Jim Messina told supporters "no matter what, today is an important day to have Barack Obama's back."

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee also issued a fundraising appeal for a "health care rapid response fund," telling supporters by email Wednesday that, however the court rules, "Democrats are in for a tough fight."

Secrecy has marked each campaign's planning for the critical moment.

Obama is scheduled to be in the Oval Office with Vice President Joe Biden when the ruling is announced. The president is certain to respond to the decision, but his specific plans to do so were unclear. Romney's campaign has refused to disclose the location of a Capitol Hill venue where he will face reporters shortly after the announcement.

It is clear, however, that the Supreme Court's ruling on Obama's sweeping federal health care law will shape the contours of the presidential campaign through the summer and fall. Both Obama and his Republican rival are primed to use the outcome ? whatever it is ? for political gain.

Obama has expressed confidence the court will uphold his signature legislative initiative. But he won't be shocked if a conservative majority overturns the most controversial provision, those familiar with his thinking say. Romney aides say the Republican candidate will get a political boost if the court strikes down the measure. But they don't want celebrations that could alienate voters who could lose health care benefits as a result of the decision.

The court's ruling could have a far-reaching impact on the nation's health care system. If the law is upheld, about 30 million of the 50 million uninsured Americans would get coverage in 2014 when a big expansion begins.

Overturning all or part of the law could leave as uninsured the more than 3 million young adults who gained coverage through a provision allowing them to stay on their parents' insurance up to age 26, according to the Health and Human Services Department. Another 60,000 people who gained coverage through a plan for those with pre-existing conditions may not be able to get coverage elsewhere if the entire law is struck down.

Obama recently has avoided mentioning the impending court ruling directly, but during campaign events this week he has vigorously defended the health care overhaul as critical to the public's health and well-being.

"I think it was the right thing to do. I know it was the right thing to do," he told supporters in Boston.

Romney, who as Massachusetts governor signed a health care law on which the Obama's federal law was modeled, has focused more than usual on the Supreme Court ruling this week. In campaign appearances in Virginia, New Jersey and New York, he offered supporters and donors a preview of his likely response to the decision and said Obama's first term would be essentially wasted if the law is overturned.

If the court upholds the law, Romney told supporters at a northern Virginia electronics manufacturer Wednesday, it's still bad policy. "And that'll mean if I'm elected president we're going to repeal it and replace it," he said.

And if the court strikes down the law, Romney said, "They're going to be doing some of my work for me."

Obama advisers say the Supreme Court showed reasonableness earlier this week in a ruling on an Arizona immigration case, and they see it as a hopeful sign for how the court might rule on health care.

If the court upholds the law, Obama could get an election-year gust of wind at his back, with his vision and leadership validated. If the court strikes down the overhaul, the White House would seek to cast the decision as detrimental to millions of Americans by highlighting popular elements of the law that would disappear, such as preventive care and coverage for young adults on parents' plans.

The Romney campaign has coordinated its response directly with the Republican National Committee and House Republicans, who have agreed not to "spike the ball" ? as one Republican put it ? should the law be struck down. His campaign worries that an over-celebratory tone may turn off voters affected by the decision.

Indeed, the stakes are high for both candidates. Polling suggests that most Americans oppose the law, but an overwhelming majority want Congress and the president to find a new remedy if it's struck down.

Romney so far has spent little time crafting a comprehensive plan to replace the overhaul. And the Obama campaign already has seized on Romney's opposition to the most popular provisions in the law. For example, Romney would not prevent health care companies from denying coverage to new customers with medical conditions. Nor would he force them to cover young adults on their parents' plans through age 26.

Still, both sides will use it to raise money and motivate supporters. And outside groups are ready to unleash a flood of advertisements following the ruling, including a 16-state, $7 million ad buy from the conservative political action group Americans for Prosperity.

Date of earliest animal life reset by 30 million years

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? University of Alberta researchers have uncovered physical proof that animals existed 585 million years ago -- 30 million years earlier than previous records show.

The discovery was made by U of A geologists Ernesto Pecoits and Natalie Aubet in Uruguay. They found fossilized tracks a centimeter-long, slug-like animal left behind 585 million years ago in silty, shallow-water sediment.

A team of U of A researchers determined that the tracks were made by a primitive animal called a bilaterian, which is distinguished from other non-animal, simple life forms by its symmetry -- its top side is distinguishable from its bottom side -- and a unique set of "footprints."

U of A paleontologist Murray Gingras says fossilized tracks indicate that the soft-bodied animal's musculature enabled it to move through the sediment on the shallow ocean floor. "The pattern of movement indicates an evolutionary adaptation to search for food, which would have been organic material in the sediment," he said.

There were no fossilized remains of a bilaterian's body, just its tracks. "Generally when we find tracks of a soft-bodied animal, it means there's no trace of the body because they fossilize under different conditions," said Gingras. "It's usually just the body or just the tracks, not both."

It took more than two years for the U of A team members to satisfy themselves and a peer review panel of scientists that they had the right age for the bilaterian fossils.

U of A geochronologist Larry Heaman was among a group that returned to Uruguay to collect more fossil samples locked in a layer of sandstone. Heaman says because the depositional age of the sandstone is difficult to determine, they focused their investigation on particles of granitic rock found invading the sandstone samples.

Heaman explains that the granitic rocks were put through the university's mass spectrometry equipment, a process in which samples are bombarded by laser beams and the resulting atom- to molecule-sized particles are analyzed and dated.

Over the course of his U of A career, Heaman has taken part in a number of breakthrough research projects involving fossils. Last year he got the attention of the paleontology world when he confirmed the surprising date of a fossilized dinosaur bone found in New Mexico. Using U of A equipment, Heaman determined that the bone came from a sauropod, a plant-eating dinosaur that was alive some 700,000 years after the mass-extinction event that many believe wiped out all dinosaur life on Earth.

Heaman says the challenge in dating the bilaterian fossil makes it stand out from his other work. "This was the top research accomplishment because it has more direct relevance to the evolution of life as we know it," he said. "It was such a team effort; any one of us on our own couldn't have done this."

Before the U of A bilaterian find, the oldest sign of animal life was dated at 555 million years ago, from a find made in Russia.

Kurt Konhauser, a U of A geomicrobiologist, says the team's discovery will prompt new questions about the timing of animal evolution and the environmental conditions under which they evolved.

"This research was a huge interdisciplinary effort and shows the depth of the research capabilities here at the U of A," said Konhauser. "The challenge brought the sciences of geology, paleontology, geomicrobiology and geochronology together to nail down the age of the fossils."

Konhauser explains that in the past, research into the earliest signs of animal life would typically shift the date back by a few million years, but the U of A's finding of 30 million years is a real breakthrough.

The U of A's research team includes Ernesto Pecoits, Natalie Aubet, Kurt Konhauser, Larry Heaman, Richard Stern and Murray Gingras. The research was published June 28 in the journal Science.

Seventh Heaven with Jazz and Country

Girl with Pink Umbrella by Kelly Ann RamseyYou don?t have to do anything special to support??For The Seventh Generation.? All you have to do is share what you?re good at doing?once a year.

The not for profit For The Seventh Generation (FTSG) helps disadvantaged youth by helping them find needed services. For example a child with a severe overbite?may be able to find help with an orthodontist or a child interested in photography may get help and tips from a pro or serious amateur.

This weekend, FTSG hold its annual fundraiser: In Seventh Heaven ? Magic and Music in Motown. The gala is Saturday, June 30, beginning at 7 p.m. at The Roostertail. The fun includes live performances by Jazz ensemble Straight Ahead and Country rockers? The Jill Jack Band.

Tickets for In Seventh Heaven ? Magic and Music in Motown are $100 per person and are available online through the For The Seventh Generation website. Space is limited; reserve early.

From FTSG:

On Saturday, June 30, the Roostertail will play host to some of the metro area?s most well-known and loved entertainers during a fundraising event for an organization that benefits foster children in Wayne County.

Perennial Detroit Music Award winners the Jill Jack Band and radio host Linda Lexy will join the Grammy-nominated jazz ensemble Straight Ahead on the Roostertail?s indoor and outdoor stages during In Seventh Heaven ? Magic and Music in Motown, the annual fundraising event for For The Seventh Generation, a Wayne County organization that matches foster children with donations of goods and services. The event will begin at 7 p.m.

In addition to the headline entertainment, other notable members of metro Detroit?s music and artistic communities have also come forward to support the event. Park West Gallery, Kelly Ramsey Photography, and Kid Rock have made donations of items for the event?s raffle, which will also feature sheet music and other items signed by Motown legend Abdul ?Duke? Fakir of the Four Tops.

?For The Seventh Generation does fantastic work for foster kids in Wayne County ? they match children with orthodontic care, make it possible for them to do cool things like create their own comic books, and they?ve even come up with prom dresses for teens in foster care who couldn?t otherwise afford to go to the prom,? said Lexy, who hosts the weekly show ?Linda Lexy?s Party Train? live from the MotorCity Casino/Hotel?s Radio Bar. ?I?m thrilled that the In Seventh Heaven organizers asked me to host, and I really look forward to sharing the stage with Jill Jack and Straight Ahead.?

This year?s In Seventh Heaven will also mark the launch of Play It Forward!, a new signature program in conjunction with Sonya Mastick, owner of the The Lesson Rooms in Royal Oak, to provide free music lessons and instruments to foster children.

?Anyone who has heard Jill Jack perform knows that she?s one of the hottest acts out there ? not just in the metro Detroit area, but in the country,? said Mastick, a music industry insider with more than twenty years? experience. ?Between Linda Lexy, Jill Jack, Straight Ahead, and the other surprises we have planned, I know that our guests will leave In Seventh Heaven feeling they?ve just had a real night to remember ? and they?ll no doubt enjoy that special glow that comes from knowing that their fantastic evening has been in service to a fantastic cause.?

?We changed the focus of our event this year, making it more of a party, in part because we?re very excited about the way that metro Detroit?s musicians and artists are coming together to support For The Seventh Generation and help us expand our programming,? said Lorraine Weber, FTSG executive director and member of the In Seventh Heaven organizing committee. ?For The Seventh Generation is about helping foster children thrive, and with the launch of Play It Forward we?ll be able to make hundreds of children?s dreams come true in the years to come.?

?We?re very grateful to have Linda Lexy, Jill Jack, and Straight Ahead as our headliners, and we?re very excited to have such a wide variety of fantastic prizes ? including two guitars signed by Kid Rock ? at our raffle,? Weber continued.

For The Seventh Generation is a project of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association Foundation in cooperation with the Third Judicial Circuit Court of Michigan and the Michigan Department of Human Services. Get more information on the organization here.

Can Customer Service Roles Be Staffed By Computers?

Thanks to incredible advances in technology, customer service has changed greatly over the last 25 years.? In the not-too-distant past, every aspect of our interaction with a company and its services was handled through 1 on 1 human interaction.? But nowadays ? whether we?re Googling for kitchen faucet repair instructions, searching for directions on our GPS navigation system, or asking Siri for directions to the nearest seafood restaurant ? we?re relying more and more on technology to guide us through our daily lives.? Technological progress has greatly reduced the need for us to have other people solve our basic problems.

In customer service, the search for low-cost solutions has led companies to replace human interaction whenever and wherever possible. ?Without a doubt, many CEOs would be ecstatic if there were a way to cut support expenses completely by eliminating the large customer support staff necessary in any moderately sized company.? Presently however, high-tech customer support solutions can only replace humans for less-complex issues.? For example, customers can be shown a list of potential solutions to their problem before being permitted to send off a request or question to technical support staff.? On the phone, automated phone screening systems may be used to direct customers to pre-recorded answers to common queries.? However, humans are still needed when a customer has a unique or complex question, when a customer wants further explanation, or even if they simply want to hear a friendly human voice address their problem.

While we?re not at the stage where customer service reps can be replaced by artificial intelligence, are we potentially facing a future where call center outsourcing and face to face customer service is obsolete ? replaced instead with a bank of highly intelligent computers?

To answer that question, we need to briefly examine the historical role of technology in customer service.? Much of the self-serve customer service platforms we now take for granted were once positions filled by a trained, human representative.? For instance, prior to the invention of the ATM and before online banking, something as simple as a cash withdrawal or a bill payment had to be done face to face at a local bank.? Before the internet, airplane bookings had to be done in person or over the phone and then manually logged by human staff.

As technology advanced and computers and software became widely available and relatively inexpensive, businesses quickly realized that many processes once served by call centers and local brick and mortar locations could be replaced by systems staffed not with humans, but with a customer friendly self-serve software platform.? Not only did companies benefit from the scalability and cost-effectiveness of these systems, customers greatly appreciated their efficiency and accuracy.? There are countless examples of innovations that have gradually phased out the need for human service in all aspects of industry, commerce, and day to day living.? All of this seems to suggest the possibility that one day, many of the human-to-human interaction we assume is necessary will be phased out in the name of progress.

While technological innovation will continue to offer new automated solutions to old customer service problems, we?re still far from the day when customer service staff will be replaced by avatars.?

As technology advances, businesses will continue to demand low-cost, scalable customer support solutions.? And just as surely, customer acceptance for automated solutions to their service needs will increase as the speed and accuracy of alternative customer service solutions continue to progress.

Despite all the technological progress, at the end of the day, customer service is about providing the customer with what they want.? Will there be a day where artificial intelligence can answer our questions as effectively as a human?? Do we face a future where friendly robot waiters take our orders and pushy robot salespeople make us uncomfortable?? Perhaps one day.? But as long as there are customers looking for a friendly, helpful voice to answer their questions, 1 on 1 human interaction will continue to have an important role in customer service.? Until technology finds a way to replace the customer demand for personalized assistance, humans will continue to have a role in customer service ? even as the scope of that role continues to be enveloped by technology.

Economy and Society ? Blog Archive ? Global systemic crisis ...

When the trumpets of Jericho ring out seven times for the world before the crisis ? Published on GEAB no. 66, June 19, 2012.

http://www.leap2020.eu/GEAB-N-66-is-available-Red-alert-Global-systemic-crisis-September-October-2012-When-the-trumpets-of-Jericho-ring-out_a11079.html

When the trumpets of Jericho ring out seven times for the world before the crisis ? Published on GEAB no. 66, June 19, 2012.

The progression of world events unfolds in accordance with the anticipations mapped out by LEAP/E2020 during these last few quarters. Euroland has finally come out from its political torpor and short-termism since Fran?ois Hollande?s election (1) as France?s president and the Greeks have just confirmed their willingness to resolve their problems within Euroland (2) thus contradicting all the Anglo-Saxon media and Euro sceptics? ?forecasts?. ? ?

From now on, Euroland (in fact the EU minus the United Kingdom) will therefore be able to move forward and create a true project of political integration, economic efficiency and democratization over the 2012-2016 period as LEAP/E2020 anticipated last February (GEAB N?62. It?s positive news but, for the coming six-month periods, this ?second Renaissance? of the European project (3) will really be the only good news at world level.

All the other components of the global situation are in fact pointed in a negative, even catastrophic, direction. Here again, the main media are starting to echo a long-standing situation anticipated by our team for summer 2012. Indeed, in one form or another, more often on the inside pages than in big headlines (monopolized for months by Greece and the Euro (4)), one now finds the following 13 topics:

  • 1. Global recession (no engine of growth anywhere / end of the myth of the ?US recovery?) (5)
  • 2. Growing insolvency of the Western banking and financial system and henceforth partially recognized as such
  • 3. Growing frailty of key financial assets such as sovereign debts, real estate and CDSs underpinning the world?s major banks? balance sheets
  • 4. Fall off in international trade (6)
  • 5. Geopolitical tensions (in particular in the Middle East) approaching the point of a regional explosion
  • 6. Lasting global geopolitical blockage at the UN
  • 7. Rapid collapse of the whole of the Western asset-backed retirement system (7)
  • 8. Growing political divisions within the world?s ?monolithic? powers (USA, China, Russia)
  • 9. Lack of ?miracle? solutions as in 2008 /2009, because of the growing impotence of many of the major Western central banks (Fed, BoE, BoJ) and States? indebtedness
  • 10. Credibility in freefall for all countries having to assume the double load of public and excessive private debt (8)
  • 11. Inability to control/slow down the advance of mass and long-term unemployment
  • 12. Failure of monetarist and financial stimulus policies such as ?pure? austerity policies
  • 13. Quasi-systematic ineffectiveness henceforth of the alternative or recent international closed groups, G20, G8, Rio+20, WTO,? on all the key topics of what is no longer in fact a world agenda absent any consensus: economy, finances, environment, conflict resolution, fight against poverty ? //

? The shock of the autumn 2008 will seem like a small summer storm compared to what will affect planet in several months.

In fact LEAP/E2020 has never seen the chronological convergence of such a series of explosive and so fundamental factors (economy, finances, geopolitical?) since 2006, the start of its work on the global systemic crisis. Logically, in our modest attempt to regularly publish a ?crisis weather forecast?, we must therefore give our readers a ?Red Alert? because the upcoming events which are readying themselves to shake the world system next September/ October belong to this category. What Food Do We Grow, and Who Gets to Eat It?

Neil Palmer, CIAT

Photo: Neil Palmer, CIAT

One billion people eat too little. One billion others eat too much. One-third of all food harvested around the world is lost or wasted. Our global food production systems need a drastic overhaul.

Need more evidence? Agriculture today contributes one-third of global greenhouse gases emitted. Farming today is depleting soil and water, destroying forests, and hurting the planet?s biodiversity. The more food we grow, the more we destabilize the climate, and the more food we therefore must grow to compensate for crop losses due to droughts, floods, pests and disease.

The world is descending on Rio de Janeiro to map out a vision for a more sustainable and equitable future. The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, also known as Rio+20, is the best place to start figuring out how we feed our world as well. What we grow, how we grow it, and who gets to eat it are issues with profound implications, not just for our global food supply, but for our collective quality of life and the sustainability of the earth?s system. .

Numerous efforts, from the G8, the Obama administration, and the private sector, have committed tens of billions of dollars to bolstering food security and developing sustainable agriculture. Yet, a disconnect remains between these initiatives and the immediate need to scale up innovations that can produce healthy food, feed hungry people, and still protect the environment.

Rio+20 should ensure support for key approaches and innovations, not just the general principles of sustainable development.

In the span of a generation, Brazil transformed itself from a net importer of food to the world?s second-biggest agricultural exporter. Global partnerships and robust government support for agricultural research and development were key. Scientists at Brazil?s national agricultural research institute, EMBRAPA, developed soybean varieties and farming practices suited to the dry and acidic plains of Brazil, making the region a breadbasket for the world.

But innovation has not stopped there. State-of-the-art research looks at everything from preventing food waste to developing nutritionally enriched crop varieties. Now Brazil and other rapidly-emerging economies like China are partnering with developing nations in sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere to extend the benefits of agricultural R&D.

But it?s not just about overall investments and approaches. It?s also about financing to scale up solutions that work.

In Punjab, India, hundreds of thousands of farmers produce a nearly continuous supply of rice and wheat for up to 500 million people. In a rush to clear the land for wheat planting after the rice is harvested, farmers set their fields of rice stubble ablaze. Climate change is stoking this rush, as rising temperatures are reducing wheat yields by up to 15 percent, increasing the impetus to plant more crops during the winter months. But this burn depletes soil, causes human health problems, and emits about 12 megatons of carbon dioxide.

Two badly needed alternatives to burning are in early stages of use. The locally manufactured tractor-drawn ?Happy Seeder? machine cuts and lifts the rice straw, sows wheat seeds, and deposits the straw as mulch. Also in the Punjab, a new biomass-based power plant will use paddy stubble as fuel. It will collect farm residue and sell power to the private sector. Brought to scale, these solutions would improve soil fertility and human health, mitigate climate change, and create local jobs as part of a green economy.

In sub-Saharan Africa about 500 million people eat cassava every day, making it the region?s second most important source of carbohydrates. Cassava is also the prime money-making crop for hundreds of thousands of small farmers in Southeast Asia. The hotter the climate, the better it grows, making it a safety net for millions of people as temperatures rise.

But climate change is also bringing increased pest and disease outbreaks that threaten the crop. To fulfill its promise as a failsafe crop in a changing climate, new varieties are needed that further improve drought and cold tolerance, as well as pest and disease resistance. Accelerated improvement of this crop could go a long way to ensuring food security for millions of people in a changing climate.

Engine Intel: How Turbos and Superchargers Work

June 21, 2012 3:00 PM

Big engines provide a satisfying surge, but most of the time we're using only a fraction of an engine's maximum power. To increase fuel economy, automakers are rapidly employing smaller engines?both in displacement and cylinder count. Downsized engines can, however, produce big-motor power with the help of pumps that force more air into the engine. The extra air, combined with fuel, makes a more powerful "boom" when the spark plugs fire, increasing horsepower.

Automotive engine pumps come in two flavors: turbochargers and superchargers. Turbos are currently the de facto small-engine power booster because they efficiently run off the engine's exhaust. This energy may be "free," but there's a slight delay between the time the driver presses the gas and when the turbo generates boost (the delay is known as turbo lag). While turbo-makers have reduced the lag with twin-scroll ducts that increase gas velocity, surviving in the over 2000 F exhaust requires exotic and expensive materials like cast stainless steel and Inconel, a nickel?chromium alloy.

Superchargers have typically been employed when peak power?not saving fuel?is the ultimate goal (see the Corvette ZR1). But refinements like helical rotors and a bypass system for coasting have increased the blower's efficiency so that several automakers are keen to take advantage of the supercharger's relative simplicity and lower cost. Plus, a supercharger offers near instantaneous response, so a downsized, supercharged engine feels punchier in heavier vehicles like SUVs. Compared with a nonboosted engine of equal power, a smaller "pumped" one is roughly 10 percent thriftier, which is why the majority of new-car engines will almost certainly be boosted by the end of the decade.

Online Marketing: The Best Way To Find Potential Clients | Bill ...

Marketing your business online is one of the best decisions you could ever make, especially in this day and age of mobile Internet-capable devices. It seems that everyone has a smartphone in their pocket, a tablet computer in their backpack or purse, and at the very least they all have computers back home or at the office. Young kids, teenagers, the middle aged and the elderly all get online these days, and, according to recent statistics, about 80% of those Internet users are turning to search engines like Google to find local businesses. To be clear, potential clients are out there searching for a business just like yours. Whether or not those potential clients can find your business is another story altogether.

In a moment, we are going to be discussing a few online marketing efforts that you can begin putting in place right now to see immediate results. By results, we?re referring to website traffic, the new visitors that land on your website. Our goal is to turn all of those website visitors into new leads for our business. We want those individuals who are using the search engines to search for the products and services we are offering to pick up the phone, send an email, submit a message via an online form or even engage in live chat. For that to happen, you need a website. Your website will act as your Internet marketing base that all of your other marketing efforts will send traffic to. Your website is where you will send your leads that will potentially become clients.

?

Capturing Your Leads

Once you begin to drive traffic and leads to your website, you will want to develop a way to capture those leads for future marketing. If a person lands on your site and doesn?t contact you for a consultation, you may be able to entice them into a consultation later on if you?re able to keep up with your marketing efforts. For this, an email list does quite nicely.

?

Building A Targeted Email List

You are going to be sending highly-targeted traffic to your website. If you can get some or all of those individuals to subscribe to your email list, you?ll have your own private marketing audience. Essentially, you?ll have an entire pool of potential customers. If you can keep your list happy and you can provide them with valuable information that they begin to look forward to, a bond will begin to form and that?s when people tend to become long-term loyal customers.

?

Valuable Autoresponders

The email marketing platform you choose will provide you with a chance to program ?autoresponders? to go out at pre-specified times. These autoresponders are nothing more than email messages that you will send out to your email subscribers. The goal is to have your subscribers look forward to your messages, as we?ve mentioned, but doing so isn?t that easy. To write effective autoresponders, you need to know your audience inside and out and you need to know what problems they?re facing. Your autoresponders should then seek to help them find solutions to their problems.

Your autoresponders should speak to the heart of your readers and should let them see that there is light at the end of the tunnel. The problem could be as simple as how to change the brakes on a car or as complex as how to grieve after a parent has passed. Any business can be marketed via autoresponder, it just takes knowing the audience and your business to pull it off. It also takes plenty of practice. You?ll get an idea of what works and what doesn?t by the numbers of people who unsubscribe from your real stinkers. Learn from your mistakes and you?ll only get better. In fact, this should be a lesson for all of your other online marketing efforts.

?

Blog, Article And PR Marketing

If you want to drive more leads and earn more clients from online marketing, construct a website and set up an email subscriber list so that your leads can opt-in when they arrive on your site. We?ve covered that part. Now we need to drive targeted traffic to your site. Hopefully you?ve done your keyword research and you have five to ten good, solid keywords that are highly searched for, but that don?t have a lot of competition. Once you have those, start writing.

Your website should have five to ten high-quality articles related to your niche. Again, appeal to your audience?s problems and seek to solve those problems. Make your writing as good as you can. If you can?t write or you hate writing, outsource it. In this day and age of valuable content, you can?t afford to skimp. Once your website is filled up, start writing blogs, articles and press releases. Five of each will do to start. Publish the blogs on your website, the articles on any free article directories you can find and the same with the press releases.

Use your keywords as anchor text and have the articles and PRs point back to relevant articles on your website. This will get your website, blogs, articles and PRs indexed in the major search engine. Then, once traffic starts heading your way, you?ll be able to capture them as email subscribers. If you can market to those individuals and you can get them to keep their subscription instead of opt-ing out, you?ll earn more clients than you know what to do with.
