During the first year of college, the world can seem so bright, cheery and hopeful. You can?t imagine anything could come along and taint life as you know it.
For me, I remember the day that darkened my life ? something my 18-almost-19-year-old self never thought would happen ? the day I found out my mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
According to the American Cancer Society?s website, one in eight women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. Eighty-five percent of those women will have had no family history of the disease. For those of us with family history in the form of a ?first-degree relative? (mother, daughter, sister), the risk of getting breast cancer doubles.
In the days leading up to her disclosure, I knew something was a little off. I had been feeling homesick and a little down. Instead of encouraging me to keep going and telling me it would be okay, my mom actually offered to pay for me to come home.
The day I arrived in Hawaii, it was a beautiful, sunny day ? a stark contrast to the news I was about to receive.
My mother sat me down and began to tell me she had breast cancer. I remember just sitting there, still and quiet with tears pouring down my face, thinking, ?How could this be? How could my mother, a pillar of strength in our family, have cancer? Is she going to die??
You see, when my mom was 14, she found out she had a lump in her breast that turned out to be a cyst. Every so often, she would go in to the doctor?s office to have the liquid removed and tested, always with negative findings. Then in early 2003, when she was 44 years old, the cyst became cancerous, and it was then I learned how a woman who I thought was strong could become even more so.
I always looked up to and respected my mother as a symbol of a strong woman and someone whom I wanted to be like when I grew up. She always maintained a positive outlook and was strong in her faith. We may have had our moments like any mother and daughter would, but I always knew how much she loved me, and I could go to her for anything.
After her surgery as she lay in her hospital bed, I watched her struggle not to get sick from the morphine the doctor?s had given her.
The only thing that kept going through my mind was, ?Is my mom going to die? She seems so weak. I can?t believe this is happening.? We still at the time didn?t know yet if the cancer had only been in the cyst or if it had spread. And, she still had to go through chemotherapy.
For a teenager who?d had a pretty easy life, this was the scariest thing I?d ever gone through.
Luckily, my mother had a great group of friends from church and work, who helped give her the extra support she needed ? and they helped my sister and me out, bringing us meals and providing emotional support.

During her battle to recovery, the tables were turned. At the young age of 18, I was the one who had to take care of her, making sure she was clean and comfortable.
My mother seemed so frail when I took her home, but I knew she really wasn?t.
In the coming weeks, I saw strength pour out of her as she went through chemotherapy and did her best to take care of her two daughters. Never once did I hear her complain or wish for a different life. Never once did I see her turn from her faith ? if anything, this ordeal made her grow stronger in her faith.
When the results came back, she was told the cancer had in fact been only in her cyst, which had been removed during the surgery before chemo treatments. As she continued through chemo, she lost her hair and decided to wear her baldness proudly (part of the reason was because wigs made her head itch). By the fall, she had gained much of her strength back, and I headed off to college again.
I remember when I saw her later in the spring of 2004; she walked up to my dorm, looking healthy as ever. Her hair was growing back in, curlier than before, and all I could think was how weird it was to see hair on my mother?s head again. I had gotten so used to her bald head, that it was weird to see the ?salt and pepper? color of her hair.
Cancer is not unknown to us, as it runs in our family. My mother?s mother had breast cancer, and then later died of ovarian cancer when my mom was young. Because of the family history, my mother knew what to watch out for and caught the cancer early. However, family history or not, everyone should know the signs and symptoms.
As women, we should be doing our own breast self examinations and going to our women?s health appointments. Once at the right age, we should have our mammograms annually.
But, women are not the only people who can get breast cancer. I remember my mother talking about the man in her breast cancer group who had been diagnosed ? he never thought it could happen. According to the American Cancer Society?s website, about one out of 1,000 men are at risk. The Society estimates that more than 2,000 men were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2011.
That?s why it?s so important to be aware of the factors and risks that can increase our chances, and, to be aware of the disease itself.
My mother, whom I already respected, became my biggest hero the year she survived cancer. If I am ever diagnosed, I hope I will fight and survive like my mother and the 2.6 million U.S. citizens who have survived breast cancer.

A New Hampshire couple suspected of abusing the woman's 3-year-old son have been arrested while leaving a parade at a theme park in Orlando, Fla., after two weeks on the run, authorities say.
Jessica Linscott and her boyfriend, Roland Dow, were taken into custody on Wednesday evening at Universal Studios, where they had been watching the parade, U.S. marshals said.
Linscott, 23, and Dow, 27, were wanted in connection with injuries to Linscott's son, including burns and significant head injuries.
Police had received a call two weeks ago from Exeter Hospital, in Exeter, N.H., where the boy was being treated. The boy later was taken to Children's Hospital at Dartmouth in Lebanon, N.H., where he was recovering after surgery.
Tips helped to track down the couple, Rockingham County Attorney Jim Reams said.
"We were feeling pretty confident 24 hours ago that we were going to have them soon," Reams said Wednesday.
Law enforcement officials spent "countless hours" trying to find Linscott and Dow, who are from Plaistow, N.H., a town of about 8,000 residents in Rockingham County, marshals said.
Marshals looked for the couple all day Wednesday and at the end of the day found them while a crowd was breaking up after the parade and they were headed back to the theme park's attractions area, said David Charles, deputy criminal investigator for the U.S. Marshals Service in Orlando.
"They were totally surprised," he said. "They had no clue."
U.S. Marshal David L. Cargill Jr., who thanked the public for providing tips during the search for the couple, said he found it "very sad" that they were found in an area "designed to bring joy and happiness to children."
Linscott is accused of failing to get medical attention for her son when he was suffering seizures from a head injury and of failing to protect him from harm. She's charged with multiple counts of child endangerment.
Dow is charged with assault.
Linscott and Dow were jailed on Wednesday and couldn't be reached for comment by telephone. They were scheduled to be arraigned in Florida on Thursday on fugitive from justice charges.

However, if you want something a little bit different, get someone on your list a cooking class at Stages at One Washington in Dover. Chef Evan Hennessey's concept restaurant in the mills there has two or three themed dinners each month and the chef has thrown something new into the mix ? you can take a cooking class that cooks the dishes for a given dinner. Alice in Wonderland? Indulgence? Sounds like a ton of fun. The kitchen is spectacular, I really want to get my hands on some of that equipment and the food will be delicious. www.stages-dining.com
While we're on classes, take a brewing class. At A&G Homebrew Supply in Portsmouth and The Homebrew Barn in Hampton, you can get someone the gift of learning how to brew beer and wine or even cider, vinegar or make cheese. In October I did something that was a heck of a lot of fun. Over at the Lindt Chocolate Outlet in Kittery they have Create Your Own Chocolate Bar set up where you get a tray with melted chocolate, which is just like a Lindt bar (so much so that it actually is a Lindt chocolate bar), and then you go over to the bar where you can festoon it with all sorts of treats like gummy sharks, hot cinnamon hearts, coconut, nuts ? oh about 30 or so fun "toppings" in all colors. Then, the expert there will put it into a machine to harden it, wrap it up and label it and voila! You have a personalized, creative, and delicious gift for someone. This is one of those things your kids can make and give to Grandma and Grandpa (which was always the difficult part at the holidays for me). It's just $10. Now, while I was there, I discovered all sorts of new things about Lindt, including chocolate bars I'd never seen before (the outlet has a vast selection including many made in other countries). They also introduced me to the technique of putting one of those Lindt truffle balls into my coffee. I had a big "hey why didn't I think of that" moment. They have their fun gold foil-covered bears and colorful foil Santas as well as many other chocolate figures this year too. www.lindtusa.com.

Ferriss uses cooking to explain "meta-learning," a step-by-step process that can be used to master anything, whether searing steak or shooting 3-pointers in basketball. That is the real "recipe" of "The 4-Hour Chef." You'll train inside the kitchen for everything outside the kitchen. Featuring tips and tricks from chess prodigies, world-renowned chefs, pro athletes, master sommeliers, super models, and everyone in between, this "cookbook for people who don't buy cookbooks" is a guide to mastering cooking and life." There is always a great new cookbook from Phaidon press to get, and this year it's "The Lebanese Kitchen," the definitive book on Lebanese home cooking, featuring 500 authentic and delicious recipes that are simple to create at home. Salma Hage is a Lebanese housewife from Mazarat Tiffah, with more than 50 years of experience as a family cook and the recipes are simple and elegant at the same time.
If you know any restaurateurs or anyone who works in a restaurant, get them "The Art of the Restaurateur," which reveals the hidden stories behind some of the world's best restaurants, and celebrate the complex but unrecognized art of the restaurateur. It's by Nicholas Lander who owned L'Escargot in London in the 1980s and is now a renowned food columnist for the Financial Times. This is a collection of 120 recipes exploring the flavors of Jerusalem from the New York Times bestselling author of "Plenty," Yotam Ottolenghi along with Sami Tamimi. You'll explore the vibrant cuisine of their home city ? with its diverse Muslim, Jewish, and Christian communities.
Also great is "Burma: Rivers of Flavor" by Naomi Duguid (Artisan, 2012). She tells terrific stories interspersed with 125 recipes and teaches you about the culture through food.

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) ? The mental health of a U.S. Army private is the focus of a pretrial hearing on charges that he gave classified information to the secret-sharing website WikiLeaks.
The hearing for Pfc. Bradley Manning resumes Wednesday at Fort Meade in Maryland. He's seeking dismissal of the case, alleging he was illegally punished before trial by being held in needlessly harsh conditions.
The defense is seeking testimony from an officer whose command included the Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va. Manning was held there for nine months in highly restrictive, maximum custody and "prevention of injury" status.
The former installation commander, retired Col. Daniel Choike (CHOY'-kee), testified Tuesday that brig commanders refused to ease Manning's confinement conditions as recommended by psychiatrists.
Manning faces a possible life sentence if convicted of aiding the enemy.

When anonymous Ford executives told the Wall Street Journal this summer that the company would be switching out the steel body of its iconic F-150 pickup for an all-aluminum one beginning in 2014, many brand loyalists at the Ford Truck Enthusiasts forum were somewhat skeptical. Price was a concern, given that aluminum can cost as much as four times as much as steel. Others noted that aluminum is harder to repair, given that fewer body shops equipped to work with the metal: ?(I)t's not like you can just have a dent service repair it when you get a door ding or worse.? And then there was the toughness factor, with many complaining that aluminum just doesn?t evoke that same masculine/cowboy/fulfilled-by-manual-labor aesthetic: ?I like my old steel pickup, I like the feeling of having heavy protection rather then [sic] feeling like a soda can on wheels.?
Ford would later call the executives? prediction ?premature.? Still, it prompted the question: Why would America?s most popular pickup risk alienating its base? Because as the Ford execs noted, an aluminum body would shave 700 pounds off of the truck?s total weight?and the less weight the engine has to move, the less gas it will have to use. ?Weight reduction,? Ford?s global chief of product development told the Wall Street Journal, ?is going to be a big part of our strategy.?
It is possible that the gains in fuel economy will attract new customers, mitigating the loss of those loyalists who prefer the more traditional steel horse. And maybe Ford is seriously concerned with the health of Mother Earth. But it also didn?t have much of a choice.
In July 2011, the Obama administration reached an agreement with 13 major automakers?Ford included?along with the UAW and the EPA to dramatically increase vehicle fuel efficiency standards on all cars and light trucks sold in the United States: By 2025, every carmaker?s fleet would have to average 54.5 miles per gallon. It represented a near-doubling of the current standard of 29 miles per gallon?roughly the highway fuel efficiency of a Ford Taurus.
Environmental groups mostly celebrated the move?the Union of Concerned Scientists, for instance, deemed it ?a very positive development.? (Although, as financial writer Felix Salmon at Reuters has noted, the new standard will still leave us lagging behind just about every government fuel efficiency standard in the developed world.) Conservatives were, predictably, not enthused. When the terms were finalized a year later, a post-primary and pre-centrist Mitt Romney called the measures ?extreme,? arguing that they would ?limit the choices available to American families.? In an article titled ?Obama?s Sneaky, Deadly, Costly Car Tax,? conservative columnist and paid hysteric Michelle Malkin warned that the ?draconian environmental regulation ? will cost untold American lives.?
Perhaps a bit more amenable to regulations because of the bailout, automakers publicly offered their endorsement. But there was some market wariness about both the desire for such vehicles and the quick timeline for such a major move. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, an industry trade group, called the new standards ?ambitious,? ?aggressive,? and ?very, very challenging,? noting how slow the market pickup has been for hybrid cars, which in their decade or so of availability have failed to crack 2.5 percent of vehicle sales.
But it?s not like this call for greater fuel efficiency caught carmakers by surprise. The passage of the Energy Independence and Security Act in 2007 had already set a goal for the national fuel economy standard of 35 mpg by 2020?marking the first substantive change since Congress set the original standard of 27.5 mpg in 1975 (to be reached by 1985) in the wake of the oil crisis. Obama?s two subsequent goalpost relocations?first pushing Bush?s original plan up to 35.5 mpg by 2016 and then extending it with the 54.5-by-2025 plan?just demanded that carmakers act a bit more quickly.
So now the auto industry is forced to tackle something they were able to mostly ignore for a quarter of a century. And with Obama?s re-election, reality just renewed its lease. Where to start?
Some have opted for the direct route, tinkering and tweaking the engine. GM?s new Corvette, for instance, offers something called ?active fuel management,? in which the car cuts off half of the engine?s cylinders during what it calls ?light load? situations like highway coasting. Ford?s new Fusion model offers a similar fuel saving function?a ?start-stop? feature that shuts the engine down when the car is idling. All of the Big Three are even rolling out models that run clean diesel?a more efficient, low-sulfur version of the fuel?in 2013.
Jenelle Since Jenelle literally has no friends she likes, she decides to circle back and check in on some people she previously couldn't stand. Remember sweet Tori, who actually bashed Jenelle's face in? Time to be palsies again! Jenelle has found a creative way to bring Tori back into her life. She says "I just don't have anybody, that's why I wanted to come talk to you." She has a peace offering of sorts, too, and it's a pretty big deal: Ke$ha tickets. "She's like my favorite artist ever and I have to go. She's so important to me," Jenelle says. So important that you'll call up people who physically beat you down so that you don't have to go alone? Now that, my friends, is devotion.
Later, Jenelle meets her lawyer in a restaurant that looks like someone's rec room -- I just keep waiting for the weird, unmarried uncle to walk down. Anyway, her attorney is one of those cool, youngish attorneys who is "just like you!" if "you" is someone who wears sunglasses on a rope. Jenelle explains that she still chooses jail over probation, so her lawyer pulls out his phone to consult his calendar. "They're asking for the 8th through the 23rd," he says casually, like they're booking brunch. "It'll be a total of 16 days in jail," he clarifies, since he's not sure if Jenelle can count to double digits.
Jenelle whips out her phone and realizes that oops, she has a conflict. Actually, it's a total deal-breaker: she has second row seats to a Ke$ha concert. Sorry, legal system ... girlfriend's got her heart set on a killer night of thinly-veiled songs about blow jobs, so you're just gonna have to wait! Actually, here's a compromise. If she promises to embrace love as her drug instead of marijuana, could she maybe just skip prison altogether?
Ke$ha is a huge proponent of that, as evidenced in her song "Your Love Is My Drug." It goes: "Because your love, your love, your love, is my drug. Your love your love your love, I said your love, your love, your love, is my drug. Your love your love your love. I like your beard." I don't fully get that last bit, but everyone knows that the most important music rarely makes sense.
Lawyer smiles his best "I am only here because she pre-paid her retainer" smile and says that a reschedule isn't going to work. "You don't understand," Jenelle stutters. "She is my IDOL. I really can't miss that concert. That's why I got all these feathers in my hair." She gestures to all the feathers in her hair for effect. "I bought clothes for this concert. I set up hotel rooms for the concert."
Lawyer reminds her that a clean record could potentially be more important than staying in a rat-infested motel and picking up sparkly new STDs, but Jenelle's not hearing him. She WANTS those sparkly STDs. Don't you understand, idiot lawyer? She got FEATHERS IN HER HAIR in hopes of getting those STDs. "It's not JUST a concert," Jenelle tries to explain. "It's Ke$ha. I'm obsessed with this girl."
The more she talks, the more everything is starting to make sense: her obsessive chatter, the way she's secret eating french fries like her life depends on it ... the girl is totally stoned out of her demented face. She has no idea what she's talking about -- but judging from my Google search for "Kesha+lyrics," not making sense is a big part of liking her. My personal favorite discovery? The line "I threw up in the closet and I don't care." I really just adore a girl who lets her heart be her guide. And if that guide brings your drunk body sailing into a mess of pea coats, just go ahead and hurl. This is AMERICA.
But before Jenelle can decide between jail or probation, her probation officer decides for her. She shows up with a random drug test -- and since Jenelle fails, she's carted off to the big house immediately. She calls her mom and explains that her bond is $10,000 and it'll cost $1,000 to get her out. "No!," Bahhbrahh yells. "Sahhry. You make me so angry! You keep smoking weed weed weed weed. Sit in jail and pay the phrice." Jenelle wails that she'll be stuck there until August, but Bahhbrahh's seen some Dr. Phil and she's embracing tough love. "This is what's gonna happen. I get you outta jail, you hop in ya cahh, and I won't see you for a week. The hell with you! Sit in jail, I'm not comin', goohbye." Then, she hangs up with a triumphant click. Cuhlick.
Chelsea The interesting thing about Chelsea's life is that she starts every morning by looking in the mirror and thinking: "How can I look as much like a cave person as humanly possible?" Since today is a big day (she's going to watch Adam's bike thing race), she paints special cave drawings onto her face and tortures her hair until we can actually hear it scream. Seriously, her head is like Abu Ghraib for follicles.
Adam's basically living at her house, which is a problem 'cause her dad hates his guts. Oh by the way, her dad will also be watching Aubree while she secretly hangs with Adam today, no big deal. He definitely won't find out about any of this because Chelsea is historically very, very good at keeping secrets.
But today, it's her own garage that betrays her. See, the thing about quietly moving someone into your house is that you should not leave his huge tires, bikes and assorted white trash boy accoutrement right where anybody in the driveway can see them. Dad furiously calls Chelsea who quickly says Adam is simply "working on some stuff" there. PLUS DAD, she's paying her own rent now anyway so just take your babysitting and your unconditional love and support and shove it!
Luckily the fight doesn't keep her from missing the big race at Gramma's MX Park. As Adam doesn't stand up or look her in the eye or hold her hand, it's obvious that he is very glad she has come all this way! Her little heart soars as he zooms over mounds of dirt. "I LOVE HIM!" she says giddily to her friend, like Ariel. Only problem here is that this land mermaid's daddy hasn't learned the whole truth yet. Oh, whoops, that night he learns the truth! Apparently he came over and forced Adam to leave, which makes things very awkward for Chelsea. She's worried that the fight will taint Aubree's big birthday party, and laments her situation to some friends who either also have babies or rented them on the way over. Luckily, Aubree has no idea what's going on and only wants to shake her booty on command and "get low." That's not a joke. Chelsea actually talks to her like she's a backup dancing dog for Jennifer Lopez.
As Chelsea drives to the f?te, she becomes more and more anxious about her baby daddy. Her scary red-headed pal, who will hence forth be called Really Raggedy Ann, is like "I've only got 567 layers of this pink lipstick on, can you see it? Oh and also why would he not come?" Oh, I don't know Really Raggedy Ann, maybe 'cause he'll always be the same ol' guy who texted Chelsea "it's so over for the rest of ourlives ya fat stretch mark bitch tell me where and wen [sic] to sign the papers over for that mistake" in season 2? Note: That is word-for-word the text he sent, no editorial license.
They hop out at the arcade and quickly do their best to spice up one of the depressing little party rooms. At first, it really looks like the place Chuck E. Cheese would come to end it all. (Rancid cheese pills are the downfall of so many bloated, formerly famous mice.) But Chelsea kicks it into parenting mode and starts spreading out funky table cloths while her dad brings leopard balloons and a snazzy, pricey lookin' pink leopard cake. Together, they really do transform the space: It's gaudy in a way that appeals to babies, transvestites, and me. Few decorators reach such a varied audience. Though the area is finally bright, Chelsea's mood is dark. An hour into the party and Adam's still absent. But you know what probably hurts even worse? The fact that she never expected anything better.
Two hours into the party -- which, for tiny kids, is basically the end of a party -- Adam shows up wearing his best "I'm miserable" smirk. He finally cracks a smile as Aubree hops into her new, shiny pink baby Jeep. Then, Adam pops out to his car to grab his much more low-tech gift ... a little bike with training wheels. Though he had the best intentions, Aubs can't ride it yet and she runs away screaming. Love that she's learning at such a young age to always embrace name-brand over random junk. Plus, you should never take anything a boy tries to give you from the back of a truck.
Leah When Leah checks the mail -- or rather, the 100 mailboxes that inexplicably are mounted right in front of her trailer -- she has something from her lawyer. She admits that she never intended for the divorce to happen, and every step toward finalization is like being stabbed in the heart. No, it's more painful ... it's like someone saying "there's no more bottled bleach left in the world."
As she drops the girls off with Corey for his weekend, he hands her a crumpled check for child support and she makes a snarky comment about his new truck. "That's why I left," she says, alluding to how he chose buying a new ve-hickle over a better trailer for his family. "Aw, you're gonna make me peeee my pants!" he says, grinning like an unhinged coon hound. "I'm sure they woulda loved their mom and dad together a lot more than a truck," Leah persists. No, actually Leah, I'm sure the twins would prefer you spend some of that child support on a strapless bra so that we could really appreciate your tiny tops without all that bonus elastic distraction.
Friend Kayla comes over to hang out on Leah's porch -- well, technically her 3 stairs and a trailer platform -- and vent. Leah's starting to sound like a broken, sobbing record. What makes me the most angry is that she's not learning from her mistakes: Invest in waterproof mascara and eyeliner, girl! She's got a sort of 'Dark Knight' Joker thing going on as she babbles "I loved him" and does a lot of emotional and violent face rubbing.
When she sees Corey again to pick up the babies (I genuinely like that she calls them "girlfriend" and "sister"), Corey asks if the truck was the real reason for the split. Then he casually mentions how she screwed Robbie before their wedding -- do ya think that played a part, Leah? "I think we both did hurt to each other," she says wisely. "I tried to do marriage counseling," she reminds him. "I tried to do everything to do," he replies unintelligibly, careful not to lose any of that dip in his lip. At this point, they're about to murder each other in the parking lot. They decide they want to get along for the girls before jumping in their respective rides and looking pensive. Note that this time, Leah has a bikini top on under her shirt. Slow and steady changes, Leah. Slow and steady.
On the day of the court hearing, she throws on her best two-piece department store suit. Corey is donning his business casual day-glo green t-shirt and camo hat for the occasion. Afterwards, they share a bench and look shell-shocked. "We just have to be good parents," Corey says slowly. "I wish you the best," Leah chokes out. That is definitely my number one favorite passive aggressive goodbye. It simultaneously means "I'd still bone you right this very second" and "I will be torturing you for the rest of your life, don't worry." Dramatically, she takes off her ring and leaves it on the dresser. I'd suggest she pawn it, but Corey probably found it at the bottom of a cereal box, and you know Cap'n Crunch is notoriously cheap.
Kailyn Kailyn says she "still has feelings for Jo, but [is] trying to get over them because [she's] trying to make it work with Jordan." Translation: One dude ignores her, the other doesn't. She's sticking with the one who doesn't. Such a positive groundwork for young love to flourish upon! Since Jordan worships her, things are going very well. She's even washing her hair again!
But then, everything comes crashing down when a friend sends her a link of Jo and his new lady love. As Kailyn does light Facebook stalking, she uses her super-sleuth skills to decode that Jo is tipsy in a photo (the caption says "a little tipsy), and it's the same day he had Isaac. Kailyn flips out, horrified that he's choosing time with a random Vee when he could be with hers. (That line was my boyfriend's idea, obviously.) But let's be honest: You know drinking was all Isaac's idea. He's probably passed out with some stuffed animal bitches and a bottle of warm milk. Don't hate the player, hate the pacifier.
When she calls Jo to confront him, he says that A) Isaac was safe with his grandmother and B) he wasn't drinking. After a very frustrating 10 second call, she hangs up on him (well, technically first she drops the phone and then she hangs up) and does her patented far-away Cosette face. Le Teen Mom Miserables.
To blow off some steam, Kailyn pretends to eat/enjoy vegan food at a restaurant called Vegan Treats with one of her many random pals. Since everyone has that same lower lip piercing, I can't tell them apart. She's considering going to a lawyer to get revenge on Jo -- I mean, 'cause she wants more weekend time with Isaac.
She quickly goes to visit her attorney -- you remember her, Kate Gosselin's more well-educated twin? Kate Gosselin, Esquire agrees that it makes sense for Kailyn to have Isaac on the weekends. After all, with school and work, Kailyn rarely gets any quality time with her son. Still, Jo will need to agree with that ... and though it'll give him more time for shenanigans, his favorite game is still toying with Kailyn's head.

However, it should be noted that there may be constitutional issues in making a national or harmonised approach to such changes to State criminal laws
While these proposals may take some time to result in legislative changes, it is clear that bullying and harassment continue to be complex issues that are no longer seen as a just a behavioural/HR problem. They cannot be resolved in isolation. Business must ensure that they have a clear and definitive approach to managing workplace bullying, centring their efforts and processes within their work health and safety management systems as well as their HR function. Bullying is a clear and present workplace hazard that must be managed as such.

Before Election Day this year, making such a statement in public could have been considered unwise.
But when Jeff Gilmore says it now, there?s pride in his voice.
Next year, when the state starts handing out applications for marijuana-growing licenses, Gilmore hopes his extensive experience with grow lights, fertilizers and irrigation systems will give him a leg up on competitors.
Gilmore, 59, a longtime Thurston County resident, said he?s been growing and selling pot since shortly after he graduated from the University of Washington back in the Vietnam War era.
?I?m an independent farmer, and I believe in small business,? Gilmore said recently. ?I want to create 10,000 jobs in Washington in the cannabis industry.?
Gilmore is one of an army of black-market pot purveyors who, with the passage of Initiative 502 legalizing up to an ounce of pot for all adults, hope to make lateral transfers into the legitimate market.
The potential rewards are enormous.
If the federal government allows Washington to proceed with its social experiment, retail marijuana sales in the state could top $1 billion a year, according to the state?s Office of Financial Management, which studied impacts of I-502 before the Nov. 6 election.
Annual consumption, not including sales to out-of-state consumers who come here to take advantage of legal weed, could reach 94 tons, according to the agency.
Because the state will limit the number of growers, processors and retailers, some are regarding the licenses as permission to print money.
POT PIONEERS
?Think of the novelty of this,? said Tacoma attorney Jay Berneburg. ?You will be one of the first people in the entire world to legally sell marijuana. You will probably make a million dollars your first five days in business. People will be buying it just because they can.?
Over the past few years, Berneburg has become the go-to-guy for marijuana-related legal representation in the South Sound.
His clients include owners of 65 medical marijuana outlets, he said, and nearly all of them have expressed an interest in moving into the legitimate trade once the state Liquor Control Board completes its rule-making process.
?Most of my clients have expressed a desire to apply for licensing under I-502,? Berneburg said. ?We?re looking ahead to as to what they might do.?
Interest is so high, Berneburg said, he?s scheduled a workshop on Saturday for his clients who want to apply for a license.
The Liquor Control Board is at least a year away from handing down the rules that will define the new industry, and that?s if the federal government doesn?t stop the whole enterprise in its tracks before then ? a huge if, according to some.
The board has a new I-502 implementation page on its website, but it offers few hints about what the new rules might look like, other than to say the marijuana system will be similar to the one used to control alcohol.
