CoPilot GPS app includes free offline maps with optional traffic data and turn-by-turn navigation, headed to Android and iOS

ALK (that's the company behind CoPilot Live) is no stranger to GPS apps, but it's starting afresh this week with a new application offering more features for free. CoPilot GPS, which will be available on iOS and Android, goes the way of Nokia Maps in that it stores all those millions of points of interests offline, so you don't need an Internet connection to calculate directions. Download the free version and you'll also get some requisite social networking integration, walking and driving directions, the ability to choose from up to three routes and built-in Bing and Wikipedia search functionality. The app also matches Google Maps with voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation and 3D maps, but you'll have to shell out $19.99 as a one-time in-app payment for the privilege. Real-time traffic updates are also an option, but that'll cost you an additional $9.99 for a 12-month subscription. According to ALK, the app will be available for iOS and Android in early to mid March, but in the meantime we've got a handful of screens below to give you a taste of what to expect.

U.S. Brig. Gen. Kevin Bergner speaks in Baghdad in July 2007 near a poster of Ali Musa Daqduq. Daqduq was captured in Iraq in March 2007, and is accused of orchestrating the killings of five U.S. soldiers. The U.S. left Daqduq in Iraqi custody when U.S. troops formally withdrew in December. But the Obama administration is seeking to try him before a military commission.

February 24, 2012

The Obama administration is seeking to try a Lebanese man linked to Hezbollah in a military commission, expanding the reach of the military tribunal beyond al-Qaida and Taliban suspects for the first time.

The man at the center of the case is Ali Musa Daqduq. He was the last detainee held by American forces in Iraq and had been turned over to Iraqi custody when U.S. forces formally withdrew from Iraq in December.

Daqduq is accused of helping to train insurgents in the use of roadside bombs, and allegedly helped organize a raid in January 2007 that killed five American soldiers and wounded three others.

Apparently the insurgents wore American-style uniforms and carried forged identity cards to get close enough to the U.S. soldiers to kill them. Daqduq was captured a short time later and allegedly confessed to the crimes. He had not, apparently, been subjected to any harsh interrogation techniques when he admitted to being part of the plot. News of the effort to resolve the Daqduq case in a military tribunal was first reported by the New York Times.

?Due to the president?s concerns about the crimes Daqduq is alleged to have committed, we are working with Iraq to effect Daqduq?s transfer to a U.S. military commission consistent with U.S. and Iraqi law,? said Lt. Col. Todd Breasseale. ?We are seeking the fastest possible way to bring him to justice.?

Many Legal Hurdles

But officials close to the process tell NPR that the effort to bring Daqduq to a military commission is in the earliest stages.

No doubt this is a very special case.

- Matthew Waxman, a senior adviser on detainee affairs in the Bush administration

While a prosecutor has drawn up the charges, the chief prosecutor at the military commissions, Gen. Mark Martins, has yet to approve them. Once those charges are approved by the chief prosecutor, they are then forwarded to a convening authority who makes an independent determination as to whether to refer the charges for trial. Nothing beyond the drawing up of charges has happened yet.

Officials familiar with the process tell NPR that the Daqduq charges will likely stay in Martins? office until there is some sort of resolution about whether Daqduq will be extradited to the U.S. or, more likely, taken to a third country to stand trial before a military commission.

Military commissions, by design, can be convened anywhere. They do not necessarily have to take place at the naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Breasseale said that there are multiple charges against Daqduq, including murder in violation of the law of war, attempted taking of hostages, perfidy, spying and terrorism.

A Special Case

The Daqduq case has been a special one for the U.S. for a number of reasons. He was the last prisoner held by U.S. forces in Iraq, and U.S. officials were concerned that he might be released or returned to Iran if he was left in Iraqi hands. Under an agreement with the Bush administration, however, the Iraq government controlled decisions about prisoners like Daqduq.

Late last year, during negotiations about prisoners, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki refused to allow the U.S. to remove Daqduq from Iraq summarily. The Iraqi leader said he would consider handing over Daqduq to the Americans if formal legal processes are followed. The preliminary charges appear to be part of an effort to do that.

?No doubt this is a very special case,? said Matthew Waxman, who was a senior policy adviser on detainee affairs in the Bush administration and is now a professor at Columbia Law School. ?And the administration will go to great pains to say this is not an expansion. However, having worked in this area for a while, I?ve come to learn that there will always be other special cases.?

Apple patent application points to DJ-like beat matching, pairs iTunes with fist pumps

Once upon a less digital time, there existed the art of the mixtape: a tedious labor of love that required timing, taste and a penchant for musical progression. No longer in this iTunes-era, where personally curated song collections that once served as the background to our lives can now be automated by our dear friends in Cupertino. And, based on a patent application filed back in August of 2010, those Apple-made robo-playlists could get even smarter and slicker, with your perennially hip, millennial compadres being none the wiser. According to the claims covered, "an electronic device" (insert Mac or iOS product here) would be able to locate and interpret beats from a preceding AAC, MP3 or WMA file and crossfade them into those of the following track. In other words, it's a virtual disc jockey built into your machine; one that would supercede the currently available DJ feature. Whether or not this Sven Väth-like software will pan out in the company's favor remains to be seen. So, until that fateful day arrives, the creation of those fist-pumping, house mixes is better left to the few, the proud, the orange-skinned.

Apple boss: OK, we do have too much money

Apple CEO Tim Cook believes the world's most valuable company has more money than it needs. His next challenge is to figure out whether Apple should break from the cash-hoarding ways of his predecessor, the late Steve Jobs, and dip into its $98 billion bank account to pay shareholders a dividend this year.

During a question-and-answer session Thursday at the company's annual shareholders' meeting, Cook indicated he and the rest of Apple's board are nearing a decision.

The board and management are "thinking about this very deeply," Cook said. "This isn't a case where 100 percent of people are going to agree with what we do."

The question of how to handle Apple's cash stockpile is a touchy one, partly because company co-founder Jobs had steadfastly brushed aside suggestions that the company restore its quarterly dividend. Apple stopped making the shareholder payments in 1995 when it was in such deep trouble that it needed to hold on to every cent.

Things got so bad that Apple turned to rival Microsoft Corp. in 1997 for $150 million infusion to stay afloat. Microsoft came to the rescue at the same time Apple named Jobs as its CEO ? a decision that turned out to be one of the smartest business moves ever made.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

Haunted by memories of Apple's grim times, Jobs kept accumulating cash even as the company's fortunes soared during the final decade of his life.

Cook, though, appears willing to return some of the cash to shareholders since he succeeded Jobs as Apple's CEO last August. Jobs died Oct. 5 after a long battle with cancer.

During Thursday's meeting, Cook dropped his strongest hint yet that Apple will part with some of the money. "Frankly speaking," Cook said, "it's more than we need to run the company."

One Apple shareholder, Asif Khan of Sugar Land, Texas, urged Cook to resist committing to dividend every three months. He thinks it makes more sense for Apple to pay a one-time dividend later this year before the expiration of a provision that limits the federal tax rate on dividends to 15 percent.

If Apple opts for a regular quarterly dividend, Khan is worried it might be misinterpreted by some investors as a sign that Apple is losing confidence in its ability to keep propelling its stock price higher as the company churns out hit products such as the iPhone and iPad.

During the past year, Apple's stock has surged 50 percent to create about $160 billion in shareholder wealth Apple now has a market value of $480 billion ? more than the combined value of Microsoft and prominent rival, Google Inc.

Apple shares gained $3.35 Thursday to close at $516.39. The high price sparked a question Thursday about whether Apple plans to split its stock to make it more affordable to buy. Cook indicated it's unlikely to occur, saying the board has studied the history of other companies that regularly split their stock and concluded "it does nothing" for long-term returns." Apple last split its stock seven years ago. The shares have increased 11-fold since then.

Although most of those gains occurred under Jobs' leadership, Apple's stock and financial results have remained stellar under Cook, Job's hand-picked successor. Cook has worked as a top Apple executive since 1998.

Given how well Apple has been doing, shareholders had little reason to complain at Thursday's hour-long meeting.

While shareholders waited in a 40-minute line to get inside the meeting at Apple's Cupertino, Calif. headquarters, a few protesters carried signs urging the company to ensure that workers building its products in Taiwanese and Chinese factories are paid more and treated humanely. "Stop iSweatshop," one sign implored. Another stated: 'iWant an ethical phone." No questions about the conditions in Apple's overseas factories were posed during the meeting.

In other matters, Apple agreed to adopt a proposal from the public pension fund Calpers that will require all of the company's directors to receive a majority of shareholder votes to remain on the board. The proposal was backed by more than 80 percent of the shareholder votes counted in the preliminary results announced by Apple Thursday.

All eight of Apple's current directors were re-elected with at least 81 percent of the shareholder votes in the preliminary results, so the switch to majority-voting rules wouldn't have changed this year's outcome if the new rules had already been in effect.

(AP Photo/Steve Helber, File)

(AP) ? Jurors in the murder trial of a former University of Virginia lacrosse player began deliberations Wednesday, deciding whether he battered his ex-girlfriend to death in a drunken, jealous rage or if his intent to simply talk spiraled out of control, leaving her bleeding and dying in her bedroom.

The jury has been presented those two versions of what happened on the night of March 2, 2010, hearing from nearly 60 witnesses over nine days.

George Huguely V, of Chevy Chase, Md., could face life in prison if convicted of murder in the death of 22-year-old Yeardley Love, whose body was found in the early hours of May 3, 2010. Jurors can also consider lesser charges, including manslaughter and second-degree murder.

Love, a suburban Baltimore woman and lacrosse player on the women's team, was found face down on her pillow. Her right eye was swollen and bruised, she had marks on her chest that suggested she was grabbed and had injuries around her jaw, inside her mouth and neck. A coroner concluded she died of blunt force trauma. Jurors heard several potentially lethal consequences of such injuries.

The final 15 minutes the two seniors spent together likely will be critical to the jury's deliberations.

Huguely, in a police interrogation video viewed by jurors, said he went to Love's apartment to talk about their sputtering, two-year relationship and she "freaked out" when he broke into her room. Their encounter quickly turned physical, with Huguely admitting he may have shook her but insisting he didn't grab her neck or punch her. He also claimed she repeatedly banged her head on the bedroom wall.

A medical expert for the defense testified that Love likely smothered, her face buried in her own blood-dampened pillow. Huguely's defense team has also suggested Love's death was the result of drinking and a prescription drug she took for attention-deficit disorder. A coroner said both substances were in her body but not in potentially lethal doses.

The prosecution paints a much more sinister scenario.

Huguely, now 24, went to her apartment less than one week after he sent her a threatening email about her relationship with a North Carolina lacrosse player.

In the email, Huguely wrote that when he found out about the relationship, "I should have killed you."

Prosecutor Dave Chapman portrayed Huguely as intent on controlling Love. He came to her apartment to physically impose his will, kicking a hole in her bedroom door and reaching in and unlocking the door, the prosecutor said.

"That's the beginning of terror, ladies and gentlemen," said Chapman, who seemed to sob as he began closing arguments Saturday. "It's just unimaginable what that woman went through and you know it."

Then 210 pounds and nearly a foot taller than Love, Huguely battered her face and likely held her down by her neck and covered her mouth, the prosecutor said, explaining her injuries.

Prosecution medical experts said her death, which came about two hours after Huguely left, could have been caused by a loss of blood flow from the critical carotid artery. They also testified of bruising on her brain ? the result of her brain striking the interior of her skull ? and blood pooling near her brain stem. The latter was likely caused by a wrenching or torqueing of the head, experts testified.

Chapman said Huguely left Love's apartment with her laptop computer, tossing it in a trash bin in an apparent attempt to hide incriminating emails.

The alleged computer theft is critical because Chapman is seeking a conviction on felony murder for Love's death while in the process of robbery.

In his closing arguments, defense attorney Francis McQ. Lawrence described Huguely as hulking, hard-drinking jock but no killer. He acknowledged Huguely had an unintended, accidental role in Love's death, arguing for a finding of involuntary manslaughter and a 10-year prison term.

Huguely, a member of a well-to-do Washington family, was a "boy athlete" and he and Love lived in what Lawrence described as a "lacrosse ghetto" where drinking, sexually charged relationships and emotional outbursts were the norm among elite athletes.

Huguely now bears little resemblance to the stocky 6-foot, 200-pound Division I athlete of nearly two years ago. He is now about 30-40 pounds lighter and pasty from his time in jail awaiting trial. He did not testify during the trial.

Besides the first-degree murder count, Huguely is charged with two counts of felony breaking and entering, theft and murder in the commission of a robbery.

If jurors return guilty verdicts, the trial will shift almost immediately to the sentencing phase. It will include opening statements, witnesses and closing arguments.

The jury will then deliberate the sentence.
