FORTUNE -- One way to view the U.S. smartphone data released Thursday by comScore (spreadsheets below) is to look at the total number of new subscribers in the 3-month period covered (November 2012 to February 2013) and compare the number of users who bought Apple (AAPL) iPhones with those who chose Google (GOOG) Android phones.

  • Total new smartphone subscribers: 10.4 million
  • New iPhone subscribers: 8.9 million (85%)
  • New Android subscribers: 2.9 million (28%)

The percentages add up to more than 100% because BlackBerry (BBRY) lost 1.7 million subscribers in the 3-month period.

Reader Brian Loftus has been tracking the data since August 2010. His chart (above) suggests that the gains Android made in the U.S. with the release of the Samsung Galaxy S3 last summer have run their course and that Apple continues to benefit from the launch of the iPhone 5. It will be interesting to see what happens when the Galaxy S4 goes on sale later this month.
